  • Game Development Mapping Contest

    Introduction

Welcome to PC's Game Development Mapping Contest! I want the Game Development section to be more of a Game Development Community, so I'm going to host several events related to Game Development and hopefully a good amount of members will participate. The member who wins the contest will receive an emblem. Every member who participates in the contest will also receive an emblem.

    Rules

    • Program
You must provide what program that you used to make the map you entered.
    • Map Requirements
Your map must not be smaller than 30x25 or 560x400px.
    • Questions
For any questions please contact one of the judges through a VM or a PM.
    • Credits
If you're using anybody else's tiles make sure you do credit them. Theft is against the rules.
You have 15 days to enter your map in. There will be no exceptions.

  • I've always wanted something like this. I'm in. So our maps should be posted in this thread when we are done?

  • 30x25?
I think you're referring to the RMXP dimensions. I think you should make it more specific just in case someone else uses a different program such as paint and photoshop.
Even though i'm sure RMXP will be most likely used.

    30x25 is about 560x400px.

At any rate, I have begun work on my map. That is all I shall say.

30x25 is the dimensions in tiles. Even if you are using photoshop or something like that you should know that with that information what your dimensions should be in photoshop.

Tiles for the record, should be 16X16 or 32X32, and you shouldn't cheat to double your mapping size area ;P

Just a question, do the maps have to be made new for the contest? I have a map or two already made up that I wouldn't mind entering, but if they aren't allowed then I've got some work to do.
Oh and does the file format of the map image matter? Should it be jpeg'd for security?
    Cheers, Jim.

Sure, as long as it meets the requirements it is fine to enter.

I would say that it is best to keep your map in .PNG, for best results in judging stages. But a "No ripping tiles from other entrants maps" policy would be a nice addition imo.

.png is best, please try to submit maps in this format. Keeps it clear and light in file weight.

As far as ripping tiles goes from other maps, that falls under the stealing category. Just because the tile is a public one does not mean that the palette is up for grabs on such tiles. Any tiles that are clearly not public and are seen in your map will be considered stolen assuming you have not received permission to use said tiles.

Things like this I am not to worried about seeing as most of you seem to know what you can and cannot do with tiles.

  • Meh :P

I don't know if I should enter or apply as judge...

This kinda contest is more for mappers in the making, and I guess skilled mappers are needed
    for judges. :/

There is a sufficient number of judges. And this contest is in no way aimed at mappers in the making. I was someone who talked to Cilerba about starting the event. So I don't see your point, it's fairly numb.

I'll be entering the competition and I'm not a novice mapper, and I'm sure there will be some novice mappers entering too, but you're under a misconception if you think that this contest is for mappers in the learning stages.

  • How are you going to remove bias from the judging process? There are many different tilesets one could use and many different styles one could use to create their maps from these tilesets, how can you fairly judge one map against another if there is no common denominator?
