All of these responses are great. I think on my most recent (& ongoing) playthrough, which I've tried to rely on little info as possible up until now, has been two things. First encounter with Blue: I had not level grinded and forgot all about that encounter. It's documented in Gotta Ketchum...

Because at the same level, a Beedrill can't kick the same amount of pokétail that Butterfree can. Confusion has something to do with it. In fact I have a clear case of this. Last night (no spoiler), while recording, I had both of them at same level in group. They were going up against mobs...
