  • Many of us out there can speak multiple languages! Which ones can you speak - just English, or others too? Was English your first language? Do you want to learn any other languages if you can?

Hindi, my mother tongue, though I write better in English! Also know a little bit of French but that was in school so IDK if we can count that?

Also India has a lot of dialects which are fairly easy to understand if you know Hindi!

I would love to learn Japanese and German though NGL!

  • I love languages! Italian is my first language, but other than English, I can speak some other stuff too. I'm an intermediate in French, i'm a beginner/intermediate in Japanese.
I think they don't count as true languages because they're just too difficult to speak and are dead languages, but I can translate Latin and Ancient Greek (even though i would need to do some serious revising lol).
I would like to improve my Japanese and maybe learn some other language. Chinese and German are interesting.

I took German waaaay back in high school. I know basic French from writing and wanting my character to be from Québec. I took Japanese in college which ended up helping me when I worked for Round 1 when corporate came to do promotional work and I was picked to help out.

I've always wanted to learn ASL, Italian and then both Irish Gaélic and Scottish Gaèlic.

I tend to pick up on languages when I watch different things like Anime or wrestling and then try and learn more going from there.

English and French. I don't consider myself 'fluent' in French but I can work my way around it.

I actually recently tested myself and I was surprised with how much I remembered.

  • Dutch is my mother tongue. Started teaching myself English while still in elementary school several years before they started teaching it, which is only in the final 2 years. Picked it up from playing videogames, watching movies, listening to music. Naturally, for a lot of the words I initially did not know how to write them as I'd only heard them.

Fluent in Dutch and English... I'm okay with German, I'll often understand what's being said when I hear it or see German text. I'm definitely not fluent though.
    Average maybe?

Native language is German. I had English in school. but honestly, I learnt it mostly through playing video games and watching videos on Youtube. xD

I've also had Latin in school for six years but that's so long ago. I barely even remember it happening. There's also a bunch of programming languages. But I suspect they don't count.

Not sure if I want to learn any new language in, at least, the near future.

Just English. Took French for six years throughout school. Never reached conversational level. Struggles with talking with people in English (and maybe sometimes hearing clearly?). Was never going to go well on that front. Fared considerably better on pure reading/writing.

Diminished in ability with disuse. Pulled it out for a game once. (Released stuff in French first. Lagged behind on the English by a day or two sometimes.) Occasionally answers a question about someone speaking French in a movie or some phrase somewhere. Never needs it beyond that.

Does not regret learning French. Developed an appreciation for the difficulty of learning a language. Likely understands English a little better because of it too. Wishes to have not taken it for so long, though. Grew to hate it.

  • Just English, I tried taking Spanish a few years back and made decent progress (probably up to ~A2); but I'm very rusty at this point due to hardly having any opportunities to practice it. I definitely want to learn another language to fluency in the future though. English just feels a bit basic and dull to me; it's the most widely spoken language, which is useful for communication; but I feel like other languages are so much more unique and exciting compared to boring old English.

  • My mother tongue is Czech, which also automatically makes me understand Slovak, because how similar and interconnected or languages are. I always find it amusing how are people not familiar with our languages surprised when I can talk Czech and someone else Slovak and we can have completely normal conversation.

I also know English (obviously) and I can speak a little bit German and Polish. I'm currently learning German via Duolingo to get better at it. And I would love to learn Spanish one day and also Korean or Japanese. But that something I'll probably never get around to.

  • Just English and the very limited Japanese I picked up by watching anime.

I took Spanish in high school, did very well in the class too, but I've since forgotten most of it - except how to insult people in Spanish lol

  • I'm a native Spanish speaker, have English as a second language, and I'm studying French and German in my free time just because I find learning about other languages fun.

  • Just English, I admire the ability to speak any second language even halfway decent. I can pick up small bits of Japanese here and there from stuff like anime or seiyuu videos, but those are things I'll still watch with subtitles.

  • I unfortunately only know English fluently. I know very little bits of Japanese, but that's about it. I wish I knew more. Like, I took French in middle school but dropped it. x_x

  • Native English speaker and proficient enough in Japanese to deal with confused government officials when I visit Japan. I don't think I can speak French anymore but the other day I surprised myself with how well I can still read it. Maybe it's time to pick it back up?

  • Fluently, only English. I took French in high school all 4 years and a semester last fall, but I wouldn't consider myself fluent. I only know Japanese through anime and video games and such. Best I can do is pick out random words I know and (sort of) reading katakana.

This might sound weird, but I like when I'm listening to someone speak in another language and they say a random word I know. I always say "hehe I know that word." Even knowing one word can help to better understand what they're saying!
