It looks pretty entertaining with all the twists and stuff. What do y'all think?

  • I have; I really like the greater focus on story the game has and the entirely new dex forcing you to actually use unfamiliar Pokemon instead of just sticking with old favorites. The graphics also look pretty damn good for an original DS game.

  • I recently replayed it, and definitely appreciated it more a second time around. My sole gripe is with the early-game Pokédex. I'm not so fond of Lillipup, Patrat or Pidove, and so there really aren't a lot of early-game options. In a Unova playthrough my team really doesn't have much beyond a starter until I'm about 3 badges in.

But, once things open up, I love the Pokédex, the story, and the region - so many awesome areas to explore, and fleshed out in a wonderful way for the sequels.

Curious to see if we're getting a remake announcement or something in the coming weeks… I kinda hope we don't, though, because I know B2W2 will be overlooked, despite giving us the definitive version of Unova.

  • Black and White are great. I always have fun replaying them. I like the need of the original games to only use Unova Pokémon, but to be honest, I think quite a lot of Unova Pokémon designs' are not that good. They have this "wanna-be cool and edgy" feeling. And there are way too many humanoid Pokémon for my liking.

  • I played Black only once and it'll forever be the game with the most disappointing selection of new Pokemon to me. A lot of them have grown on me over time, but during my first ever playthrough? Nah, I could count the mons I liked back then on both hands.
The new Pokemon are the most important thing in a game to me and BW's just weren't cutting it at all for me at the time.

B2W2 on the other hand were okay as they at least allowed you to use Pokemon from previous gens before beating the E4.

The announcement for Black and White is when I first joined this forum, many millions of years ago - when I first played through, I really couldn't appreciate them. I think I came back to them in around 2012 or early 2013 when Pokemon X and Y were announced, and now B/W and B2/W2 are two of my all time favourite games in the series. What felt like a step back (losing my favourite Pokemon) is actually the perfect back-to-basics the series needed at the time.

Replayed Black recently for the first time in over a decade. Liked some of the battles and some decent gym designs. Produced some good, lively sprites too. (Feels a little less enthusiastic about the Pokemon themselves, though not terribly so.) Falters on trainer variety in particular.

Example: Twist Mountain. Looked at all 13 trainers. Excluded Cheren here.

    Boldore: 1 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8
    Gurdurr: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
    Sawk: 1
    Throh: 1
    Excadrill: 1 + 1 = 2
    Duosion: 2
    Musharna: 1
    Woobat: 1 + 1 = 2
    Swoobat: 1
    Vanillish: 1
    Gothorita: 1
    Krokorok: 1
    Palpitoad: 1
    Klang: 1

8 Boldores. Accounted for a little over 30% of all Pokemon on trainers. Really wears on you with the new Sturdy too.

Alternatively, look at the Icirrus Gym. Consists of 7 trainers.
    Cubchoo: 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5
    Beartic: 1
    Cryogonal: 1 + 1 = 2
    Vanillish: 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 5

Four unique Pokemon across seven trainers, with two of them in the same line. Stuck all the non-legendary Ice Pokemon in there. Basically never saw them outside of the immediate area either. Mirrors the same problem earlier generations had (such as the Cinnabar Gym or the far more egregious Ecruteak Gym).

Mentions another metric for similarity: Effort Values. Soloed this playthrough, as part of a challenge. Did not train effort values. Look how they shook out:
    Hitpoints: 37 EVs
    Attack: 186 EVs
    Defense: 51 EVs
    Special Attack: 48 EVs
    Special Defense: 7 EVs
    Speed: 181 EVs

Note how Hitpoints + Defense + Special Attack + Special Defense = 143. Comes in below Attack and Speed individually. Means a large number of Pokemon focusing on either Attack or Speed. Indicates very few Special Attackers.
