NPCs and AI have come a long way since the early video games, but they are still understandably far from being able to emulate human behavior perfectly. This can be kind of amusing in some cases, but rather frustrating or even game-breaking in others (I mean, it's funny when it's happening to your enemies or something, but if it's an idiot companion it can be terribly annoying).

What kind of stupid or funny things have you seen NPCs do in a game? And also, which games (if any) do you think deserve some praise for their intuitive AI?

Call of Duty is pretty bad when it comes to their AI. A lot of times you can walk right by or be right beside them and they won't even recognize you. Although if we're talking about World At War, then it's the complete opposite considering there is just an endless onslaught of grenades being chucked/thrown back at you...

I just realized, this whole conversation reminded me of a Rooster Teeth video that came out awhile back talking about a Resident Evil AI. It made me laugh to say the least (and it's actually true!) Just, of course, be wary of language if you're sensitive to that:

in Civ V, most AI's do nothing against you unless you go to war with them, but if you ever, EVER let Gandhi get his hands on nukes, gg no re

I know I've mentioned this before, but in Fallout: NV it seems like every time I fast travel my companions run away from me. I must be the worst leader. :(
Doesn't seem to matter where we go. Neutral territory. Friendlies or hostiles around. Whatever. They'll just run like a bat out of hell in the opposite direction until I see "Veronica has died" pop up.

I loved that about Warlock. Even going to war with them didn't do much.

Or if you built near water so that there was only one or two hexes worth of unclaimed territory left, the other Lords' units wanted it. Obviously. So the nearest ones would gather around it... and they all just kept getting in their little boat, then back on the land. Into the boat, back onto land. Turn after turn.

They never built on it, they never attacked anything. They never even had Settlers on the way. They didn't do anything. They just got in the boat one turn then right back out of the boat on the next turn. So indecisive.

In most Sonic games, your companion will just jump into water and die when attempting to follow your Light Speed Dash or Tails flying, or other stuff other characters can't do.

I kind of created this thread so that I can complain about the AI in Saints Row The Third. It's been really pissing me off - for those of you who haven't played it, in some missions you have non-optional companions to help you out in battle, but they are such an annoying hindrance. Like most followers, I don't really expect them to be too helpful or even take out enemies for me, but sometimes they will just run into walls and continue running into walls, or get trapped in random corners, which completely slows you down, because you cannot progress in missions if they aren't relatively close by you (you get a 30 second timer that says you're abandoning them if there's too big of a distance between you, and if you don't go back and get them un-stuck in time, you fail the mission). This totally sucks in timed missions since you basically have to hold their hand and guide them through areas while avoiding getting shot and keeping them from getting shot and getting to where you need to be on time. It's like an escort mission in disguise, and I just finished one where I had three of these idiots with me.

In terms of side missions, I failed the final trafficking activity over and over because Zimos literally will not get in the car. During these activities, I can't drive. When I get in a car I can only sit in there and wait for him to take his sweet time walking to the car while 500 people shoot at us from helicopters and cars. Sometimes he'll just completely stop walking, and there's nothing I can do to get him moving again until one or both of us dies. Sometimes, he'll pick a totally random car to get into. Sometimes, that car is on fire. And then he explodes and I fail the mission.

Am I really the first person who brings up the superior gen 1 enemy AI of the Pokemon series? You can beat the E4 with a couple of low level Pokemon without any problems at all. Of course they improved a little bit over time, but it's still kind of stupid seeing your partner in scripted double battles attacking the wrong Pokemon with the wrong move which means that you can't even beat both opposing Pokemon in the same turn.

Morrowind and Oblivion had some fun AI, too; as in: getting stuck in every corner, getting in my way while fighting monster. All the good stuff. I'm actually not sure how much they improved in Skyrim, considering I never used a companion the whole time playing.
