Chapter ONE (and Prologue)

Project Thanatos - Reanimation stage.

Subject 445 has been responding well to the artificial life support, we are about to shut down the life support. I am preparing Chem 33 for injection.

Subject is becoming paler and heartbeat has slowed to 61 bpm,
1100:
Subject has a heart beat of 20 bpm and little brain activity.

Subject has lost total heart beat and brain activity has ceased, time of death 11:20 Sunday 2 July 2005.
1201:
Authorization of Chem 33 confirmed. Injecting.
1205:
Subject showing no visible signs of life. Heat rate has increased to 24.
1206:
Heart rate has increased to 47. Nearing Life Threshold.
1208:
Subject's heart rate has stopped increasing and it at a steady 60 bpm

Eyes open, limbs function. Complexion is still pale.

Subject has increased brain activity in the basal ganglia.

Basal ganglia goes in to over drive.

Security breach, subject has attacked Professor Robin Jarls.

The Herbert Building is locked down, Prof. Jarls has been severely injured.

I don't know if your reading this now, but this is the only thing I got to talk to now. The only thing to keep me sane... I saw Subject 445 tear the professor from limb from limb. A security team had burst through the door a few minutes later. They restrained the subject but yet he kept on chewing on the their flesh. My heart was pumping. I could hear my arteries throbbing, adrenaline pumped in to my system. I ran to the control room. Soon enough, the bitten people opened their glassy eyes and rose from their temporary slumber, sanguine drops trailed their limping gait. They groaned, unsure from pain or baiting the unwitting from our room. These creatures had became the Childhood dream, and life's worst nightmare... The walking dead.
They had pounced, throwing themselves through the glass shattering it. They sneered like rabid animals. Each heart beat to heartbeat, their sharp claws pierced the flesh, the gauged out their victim's eyes and devoured their organs. In panic I smashed the fire extinguisher and rammed the end as fast as I could in to their face. I sprayed it in their face to disorientate them. I dropped the extinguisher and ran for my life. I rammed in to the glass window. I ran across the road, a screeching motorist slammed the breaks and knocked over one of the zombies. Who immediately got up and leapt forward and dug their bony claw fingers slam in to her chest, puncturing her heart, her scream was deafening. But with her auto mobile was bathed in blood, they ravaged bystanders and pedestrian. I blacked out in an alley, sure to be eaten...
I awoke to a salivating zombie dripping blood flavoured drool from it's gaping mouth. In panic, I pulled out a piece of pipe near me and sunk the cold metal pole in to his brain. I looked up at my watch, it had been 3 hours since Subject 445 had been resurrected. Zombies had already slumbered in the streets. Many were emaciated, as if Downtown Malton was just an entrée and the world was a buffet. A siren whined from a distance, a Police Car sped through the street at break neck speeds, It flattens several corpses that lumbered with an awkward walk. Bullets whizzed out of the police car and embed themselves in the skulls of the Undead.
Nearby, a few ambulances were trying to take a naive approach to this disaster, carting all non-violent infected to mental hospital. As such you could always find abandoned ambulances with exits pounded out. With keys still running, but few opportunists had already took most of the ones with fuel in them. I took out a jammed a piece of wood in to a door and pried it open, finding a women in a sunflower dress, I called to her, but as she turned, her flesh was torn off, and her eyes were bright red. I whacked her in the throat with my IKEA fence board.
I fumbled around in my pockets for my radio. Fortunately, It was still there, I hot wired it up to a headset, I tuned it for a few minutes. I transmitted a message, "This is NecroTech Mr. Carvel, We need assistance. Professor Jarls is dead, I repeat he is dead." a catch in my throat choked me up, "We require mobilization"
"Mrh." A zombie moan cackled, I turned around, three zombies stood in the door way, all dripped blood from their mouth, one of them was the lady from downstairs, and their was a male whose head hung loosely from his neck at a crooked angle, and the last one was a 7 year old girl, with a deathly stare and an exposed internal organs by a burst chest and stomach with tiny strips of flesh dropping off, and a shredded teddy bear was laying on the ground.
The little girl licked her lips, and then lurched towards me with intent to consume my body, and harvest my blood...

Chapter TWO

Chapter Two
I grabbed the nearest object and smashed it in to the girl's head. The lamp flew off sparks. Electric sparked out and shocked the zombie. The Zombie fell, leaving them spasming on the floor. I reached behind me and found a vase. Hurling the a 3 foot vase on to the floor in front of the two Zombies. The zombies stumble forward, the sharp shards of ceramic dug in to their green gangrenous feet. Their howling scream was hard to deafen out as I stuffed the broadcaster in a bag, I found hanging from the banister. I slung it over my back and leaped over the crawling undead.
I exited the room and slid a chair over the door. A muffled sound came from the backpack. I reached in to the bright pink bad and pulled out the radio and the microphone.
"This is the Emergency Channel, who is this?" a woman's voice came through the radio.
I panted, breathing deeply, I responded to the woman. "My name is James Carvel. NecroTech Assistant. Identification Number 8433-02"
"Thank you, what is the reason for you being on the Emergency channel?" Her voice sounded calm, almost soothing to my ears that had been subject to tormenting howls of pain for hours.
"There's been an accident at our facility, our test subjects had started to erupt in anger. My diagnostics recorded increased activity in the Basal Ganglia." I glanced around the house, the cars outside had lingering embers on them, as the charred skeleton of the vehicles were left to waste.
"Sir, this has also been reported several times before within the last 12 hours in your vicinity, The United States Auxiliary Army are already en route to your location. Stay calm and get to a safe place." The radio speaker crackled.
I wiped the sweat off my forehead. I slumped down and sat against the wall.
I had been caught in the moment, for all that time, I find it almost surprising that it took that much time for me to think about my family. My heart skipped a beat when I though about it, my mind had went in to overdrive and paranoia. I got up from the wall and scavenged for something to use as a permanent weapon, The best thing I could find was a kitchen knife, I had also found a hedge trimmer in the cupboard, but it had been emptied of it's fuel. Formulated a plan in my head, I'll get my truck from the garage and make my way to my home.
The groaning corpses had been wandering the streets for a long time now. I had crept out of the house. I ran from car wreck to car wreck, trying not to be spotted by these monsters. Some of the dead motorist were stirring from their sleep. I had to move fast, I scampered over to building and quietly stepped through the frame of the broken window. The sound of a dripping pipe just made it worst. I gently pushed the garage's door open the lights had dimmed in the underground car park. A few zombies wandered the basement, gently moaning. Swiftly, I ran to a parked BMW F10 that was across the car park, as my back tapped the car's side door when I rolled to cover a very loud whine came from the BMW, starting it's bright lights and indicators, and making them stobe. The car alarm caught the attention of the zombies in the car park, as the BMW yipped, the zombies' crooked neck rotated towards BMW. It hollered with a screech and charged at the Hatchback.
As the zombie galloped towards me, I readied my knife. As you might expect, a nerd with a masters degree wasn't in the Homicide business. I stood from my cover and flung my arm out towards the creature, with it veering off course and missing completely, the zombie sneered before pouncing on to my chest, I brought back the kitchen knife and jabbed it in to his neck, piercing the flesh, with a crack from the spinal cord. The cannibal went limp. I wasn't so good at aiming, but I sure had the anatomy down. Lugging the body aside. I pushed myself up and stood up. I walked over to my Chevrolet Colorado and opened the door, I reached in to my pocket and brought out my keys and put the key in the ignition and started the truck. I drove to the gate, it lifted up automatically, revealing a crowd of zombies that had also heard the BMW's alarm. I switched my gear to first gear and put my foot to the metal. My truck growled and sped forward and rammed the front of my truck in to the congregation of Zombies. The truck complied and flattened several corpses before speeding away with a mad crowd in tow.
It was almost strangely exhilarating running down any zombie mad enough to stay in the road. Which was a lot of them. It almost made me forget where I was going. Screeching down Boston Street, my joyride came to a stop when I noticed my house's door was wide open. I put on the handbrake and turned off the engine before stepping out. Taking the flashlight out of the glove compartment, I walked down my garden path. I picked up a baseball bat from the garden, I went up to my door, placing my hand on the door frame, I sighed. The door had been assaulted with giant scratch marks. I made my way in to the lounge, I turned on the light. Finding a photo on the coffee table, the photo showed my son, Samuel, as a seven year old and my wife Sarah as well as me, that was taken a few years back, on a mountain trip we went to in Utah. I remember him saying, "That was the best holiday ever, I love you, Dad."
A thumping sound from the kitchen interrupted my thoughts. What I saw next, tore me up inside. Before me stood my pregnant wife, Sarah, as she came out from the kitchen, she was different, blood dripped from her head and gashes were all around her body, her left part of her face had been peeled off, her legs staggered. Her lips were a pale blue, unlike her usual inviting lips. Her eyes were dark. Her formerly beautiful hands had been replace by dead claws. Her eyes were glassy but still followed my movement. Behind her followed Samuel, in his bright blue tee shirt that was always his favorite, and was wearing his little tighty-whiteys as he always did around the house. His face had also been gnawed at, and his body was bloody. He was just a kid... why did he have to...
A lump caught my throat, I stared at my son and wife, standing there, like zombies... No, not like 'zombies'. They are zombies...
Sarah lurched forward, I shouted out to her, "It's me! James, your husband!" Every word was like a needle entered my heart. I felt tears welling up. I swung my baseball bat, it hit the side of her head, with a crack she fell down. Samuel screamed and bounded towards me.
"No!" I plead for mercy but none heard, I had to. That is not Sam... It's just a zombie. Hit it, hit it!
I closed my eyes and swung the bat, sending the zombie across the room.
I opened my eyes to see my family laying on the ground, lifeless. My knees buckled and tears streamed down my face, I wailed. Tear drops went on to the carpet. The holiday picture laid cracked on the ground. I covered my eyes. I rocked back and forth. Putting my hands together, I did a little prayer.
"God, I don't know if you are up there. But just answer me one thing, even if it's the only thing you ever answer me. Please... Why did this happen? Why me? Please I beg you, that we can go back, after all this, promise that I can hold.. my little boy again... Amen..." I was interrupted with knock on the wall. I looked up at the man in the uniform, He had grey camouflage uniform with a grey cap, on his chest it said, 'U.S. Army.'
The man looked down at me, "United States Army. I am Private First Class Ferguson."
I wiped my eyes, he held out his hand and I gripped it and hoisted myself up.
"Hello... Ferguson." I trembled slightly.
"I'm conducting checks of buildings, I'm looking for survivors to evacuate." He addressed me but then his gaze went adrift and looked around the room. Seeing the picture, His eyes widened in realization and his tone of voice turned softer. "Oh.. I'm sorry for your loss..."
I nodded, I crouched down to the floor and picked up the picture and put it in my bag.
"Sir, we need to move quickly. The Evacuation is already starting, Their putting up a quarantine..." He hurried me.
I sobbed lightly, I turned away from my family's dead corpses and started towards the door, never to hold my ten year old again...

Chapter Three
The Army Private walked in front as I trudged behind. The clouds started to congregate above my head. Ferguson swung the door open on his Humvee.
"Wait." I blurted out, I looked towards my truck, "What about my truck? It works, it has fuel."
"Yes, but it's not armoured. It's best to go in this vehicle." He responded.
He sighed, "Go put it in your garage, I'll tell the Sergeant to pick it up, we'll use it for the evacuation effort."
I jogged over to my pick-up truck, and got in, and turned the engine on, it hummed quietly. I spun the wheel left and pulled in to the garage. Hopping out I grabbed the garage door and paused. That truck had a meaning, a reminder to me of my family. I slowly lowered the garage door.
I turned around and walked to the street, opening the door and getting in the passenger seat. The Car jolted forward and accelerated down the road. I watched my memories of old drain away as my house disappeared from view, sitting in silence I looked down at my hands. Ahead, several vehicles littered the lane.
I cleared my throat, "So... We're going to the evacuation point?"
"Not exactly, we've got someone to pick up, another survivor." His gaze continued to be fixed on the road ahead.
"Survivor? What do you mean? How many other places have had this happen?" I raised my eyebrow.
"The estimate is around 9 other suburbs, but the scout reports are coming in steadily." He put it very factually.
I looked ahead. We turned on to Auston Street, a speed bump in the road rattled the vehicle as it went over. The glove compartment slipped open, the door hung open revealing a sawed-off shotgun.
I breathed in, turning my head to the private, "What's this doing here?"
"Emergencies." He grinned and glanced at me.
Taking a sharp turn, we pulled out in front of a hospital.
Ferguson turned off the engine and jumped out of the Humvee, his boots thumped on the ground, slamming the door shut. As the Private walked around the back, I surveyed the area, I slid my hand in to the glove compartment and pulled out the shotgun, it was quite heavy. I opened my bright pink children's backpack and dropped it in. A knocked at the window startled me. I looked to the window.
"Are you going to get out?" said the private.
I opened the door and leaped out. I nodded towards the Private before we pushed forward.
St. Anthony's Hospital was rather quiet. Had a lot more dead bodies in it than I remember. The corridors was long and dark.
I whispered to Ferguson as we walked, "Ferguson?"
"Yeah?"
"What's your name?"
"Ferguson."
"I mean, your first name." I tried to look at him, but it was too dim to see.
He sighed, "Marcus Ferguson."
I acknowledged him, "Ok."
Marcus stopped, he yelled, "Eve! It's me, from the U.S Army!"
For a few moments, there was a deadly silence. A small tip tap of shoes. A small figure stepped out of the shadow. It was a little girl with a white dress with little cartoon suns on it, her sleeves were short and her skirt went down to her ankles. She had black slip-on shoes. Her skin was the colour of milk chocolate and she had here black frizzy hair in two buns either side of her head. She had green eyes and looked only about 8.
"Hi..." She said quietly. She stared at me. "Wh..who is that?" she lifted her hand and pointed at me.
Marcus glanced over to me, then looked at the little girl, "This is..."
I saw he was struggling, Crap, I haven't told him my name. This will go well. "My name is James, what is yours?"
"Eve." She responded. She walked over to the soldier slowly.
CRASH! A loud thud interrupted our dialogue. A woman's scream came from the end of the corridor. A man's deep voice yelled, "Give me the keys. Now!"
Two figures appear from the corner of the corridor. One is a man in a leather jacket and blue jeans, the other looks like a nurse. The man has his arm around her neck and a gun touching her back.
Marcus took out his gun of the holster and brought it up to aim. "Put down the gun!"
The man turned his head towards us, Eve scampered behind Ferguson. The man grinned as he picked something up from the nurse, and she dropped to the ground.
"I have what I came for, The Law can't exist in this new world. You don't scare me!" He cackled.
He looked down at the nurse. "I have no use for you any more."
He aimed his gun towards her, No... He's not going to... With a bang, the bullet entered her head and blood erupted and splattered on to the wall. Her arms fell from her neck she was rubbing on to the ground.
A screech echoed throughout the halls. "Shit!" The man cried out after glancing behind him. He rammed the fire exit push bar and the door opened. A howling yelp emanated from the speakers.
"Please stay calm, please evacuate all patients with sufficient life support and meet at the fire assembly point." The speaker continued it's yelp after announcing the automated message.
"Run!" Marcus shouted to us. Coming around the corner a wave of disfigured zombies in hospital gowns and doctor's jackets rushed towards us.
I nodded and held my hand out to Eve. We started to run away, I looked back, I saw a zombie spring from the crowd and lunged at Ferguson, reaching his bloody claws out to impale him. I opened my backpack and yanked out the Pump Shotgun and brandished it towards the zombie who has now pushed the private to the ground. I breathed out slowly and then pulled the trigger, a loud bang came out and a shut my eyes. When I opened them, Marcus was standing up, A few zombies tripped over their dead body of their friend. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a water cooler.
I glanced at eve, who also noticed it. "Eve!" I gestured to the water tank. She nodded and began spinning it around.
I ran up to Marcus and grabbed his collar and pulled him back. "Stall!" I yelled over the hunger groans of the Undead.
Eve unscrewed the top and attempted to pick it up, but she failed. She shoved it over, the tank fell with a thud. I kicked it forward.
"Shoot it!" I barked at Ferguson. He aimed it towards it and fired his pistol. The Water spurted out and started to drain, the corpses slipped on the wet floor.
I grabbed the Private's Arm and and pulled him towards the door way. "Drive!"
He spun around and ran to the Humvee. My heart beat thumped, my ears drummed with throbbing veins.
I bolted towards Eve, picking her up and slung her over my shoulder. The Zombies began to pick themselves up from the water spillage. I stuffed Eve in to the back seat and I dived in to the passenger seat.
The Humvee pulled forward. A few of the zombie horde attempted to catch up and the rest of the zombies just stood behind moaning about their dinner getting away.
Ferguson glanced at me. "Why did you take my shotgun?"
"Emergencies."
He laughed at my remark. Behind us, A bright red hummer smashed in to the zombies that lingered on the road.
"We've got visitors." I said to Ferguson, Ferguson looked at the rear-view mirror.
The Hummer accelerated and came up behind us, the engine roared like a lion. The 4x4 rammed the back of the humvee. The rammed jolted me forward, my seatbelt restrained me. I looked back at the driver, the driver was the man who shot the nurse. He spat out a cigarette out of his mouth. He over took us and sped forward. The hummer took a left turn.
The Private's eyes followed the hummer's path, he nudged me, "What is down that road?"
"Well that road leads to the outskirts of town, the only place I could think notable down there is the prison."
"Well, fuck." He growled.
"What? You know what he's going to do?"
"He's a felon, Jeremy Walkwood, Wanted for Shop heists, burglary and organised crime. He's going to try to bail his friends out."
"How do you know?" My eyes widened, the Humvee span around and followed the path the car went.
"Before I joined the Auxiliary army, I used to be a Cop."
The Hummer paused in the road. The engine growled, the hummer turned to the right and went off road. The Hummer struck the prison's fence, he backed up and rammed it again. The fence gave way and tore open. The driver stepped out. and opened the drivers door. A man in a bright yellow jump suit meandered over to him and high fived him. He clambered in the Red Hummer and then the car spun around and drove out of the hole. The car turned on to the road.
"Damn it."
"Go after him!" I yelled.
"There's nothing to do now." He turned around the wheel and we headed back the way we came.
After a few minutes of silence in the car. Ferguson asked, "Hey Eve, are you ok? You've been awfully quiet."
My heart thumped, I had forgotten completely about the little girl.

I turned my head around. "Hey, everything will be all right soon."

Marcus nudged me. "We're low on gas."
"Ok, there's a station on 5th Road."
The Sun had lowered in the sky. I was no expert but it was almost sun-down when we arrived at the TEXACO. Marcus looked at me.
"You're going to have to go inside, and accept the pump usage. You've done well with that shotgun."
I forced a smile, how on earth can I wield a gun? That was just a fluke...
I opened the doors to the Petrol Station. Yes! No stupid alarms. I walked up to the counter and prepared to jump over. Then out of the speakers a bell sounded, the one that seemed to notify the Cashier when the pump was requested, and after that chime, a familiar groan came from the stock rooms. I leaped over the counter and pressed the screen, I looked around the millions of buttons, I saw the "Pump 2" button and pressed it. Bursting out of the stock room was a screeching zombie. I brought up my gun and pulled the trigger. The body just fell and slumped over. My heart was beating, several other rabid howling emanated from the stock room and the bathroom. Several limping zombies exploded out of the Doors. I ran for my life. My gun had no ammunition and the shriek of the zombies called upon more zombies.
Marcus turned to me, his gob dropped open. He yanked the petrol nozzle but it didn't budge. Marcus spun around and aimed his gun at the zombie horde. He fired a few stray bullets at the horde. I felt something grab my leg, a sharp object dug in to my ankle. Forcing me to collapse on to the concrete. I rolled over, a zombie was clawing at my foot. Marcus was standing over me and fired a bullet at the zombie at my leg. I rolled behind him and stood up. The zombie horde had became too big, the numbers of bodies bashed at him, They started to bite his arms and stomach. Marcus yelled in pain. Marcus had yelled at me to go, but I stood their, paralysed at the sight at what was happening before my very eyes, the horde started harvesting his organs. Private First Class Marcus Ferguson took his last breaths pushing to me his gun, his dog tag and a map. I scrambled for it, Taking them. RUN!!! my instincts shouted. I looked away and ran to the Humvee. I got in and turned on the engine. Pushing the accelerator down, I drove off, water streaming down my cheeks. The fuel nozzle was yanked out as I drove away spilling out petrol behind us in a puddle. Eve sat forward.
"What happened?" She asked, in a soft sympathetic tone.
My eyes were clouded with tears. My breathing was wheezing.
I turned to Eve, "I'm going to get you out of here... If it's the last thing I do..."
The Army Private walked in front as I trudged behind. The clouds started to congregate above my head. Ferguson swung the door open on his Humvee.
"Wait." I blurted out, I looked towards my truck, "What about my truck? It works, it has fuel."
"Yes, but it's not armoured. It's best to go in this vehicle." He responded.
He sighed, "Go put it in your garage, I'll tell the Sergeant to pick it up, we'll use it for the evacuation effort."
I jogged over to my pick-up truck, and got in, and turned the engine on, it hummed quietly. I spun the wheel left and pulled in to the garage. Hopping out I grabbed the garage door and paused. That truck had a meaning, a reminder to me of my family. I slowly lowered the garage door.
I turned around and walked to the street, opening the door and getting in the passenger seat. The Car jolted forward and accelerated down the road. I watched my memories of old drain away as my house disappeared from view, sitting in silence I looked down at my hands. Ahead, several vehicles littered the lane.
I cleared my throat, "So... We're going to the evacuation point?"
"Not exactly, we've got someone to pick up, another survivor." His gaze continued to be fixed on the road ahead.
"Survivor? What do you mean? How many other places have had this happen?" I raised my eyebrow.
"The estimate is around 9 other suburbs, but the scout reports are coming in steadily." He put it very factually.
I looked ahead. We turned on to Auston Street, a speed bump in the road rattled the vehicle as it went over. The glove compartment slipped open, the door hung open revealing a sawed-off shotgun.
I breathed in, turning my head to the private, "What's this doing here?"
"Emergencies." He grinned and glanced at me.
Taking a sharp turn, we pulled out in front of a hospital.
Ferguson turned off the engine and jumped out of the Humvee, his boots thumped on the ground, slamming the door shut. As the Private walked around the back, I surveyed the area, I slid my hand in to the glove compartment and pulled out the shotgun, it was quite heavy. I opened my bright pink children's backpack and dropped it in. A knocked at the window startled me. I looked to the window.
"Are you going to get out?" said the private.
I opened the door and leaped out. I nodded towards the Private before we pushed forward.
St. Anthony's Hospital was rather quiet. Had a lot more dead bodies in it than I remember. The corridors was long and dark.
I whispered to Ferguson as we walked, "Ferguson?"
"Yeah?"
"What's your name?"
"Ferguson."
"I mean, your first name." I tried to look at him, but it was too dim to see.
He sighed, "Marcus Ferguson."
I acknowledged him, "Ok."
Marcus stopped, he yelled, "Eve! It's me, from the U.S Army!"

Chapter Four
Eve sat next to me, I glanced over to her "I don't really know much about you." The Rain poured down from the black sky, patting against the windshield.
"Ok, I am Eve Samborne. I was in the hospital when things went crazy."
"What for?"
"Broken leg," She glanced at me, "I fell down the stairs, it was a Sunday and my dad was cooking dinner, and my puppy escaped from the kitchen and the front door was open, I ran to stop him but I tripped and fell down the stairs, then I woke up in the back of an Ambulance."
"A puppy?"
"Yes," She looked out the dark window. The streetlights glowed gently, each one came and went. "My papa would visit every Sunday with a serving of my favourite dish and my mum would arrive with Poppy ever Wednesday,"
"And Poppy is your dog?"
"Yes. I used to have a strange dream, it was very vivid. These people in masks and lab coats fussed around, they looked at me like I was some kind of experiment, they kept repeating the words 'Subject 444.' They kept jabbing me with needles and then I woke up. Then is when people started to get crazy, it was really hectic. But I withdrew under the hospital bed."
I looked at her, Subject 444. Failed Test, unaffected by Chemical 33. She's the key, she's one of the test subjects and she didn't turn to a zombie, we aborted the termination before she died. But our test subjects were only prisoners with death penalties or people with terminal illnesses… My thoughts were interrupted.
"-you?" She poked me.
"Pardon?"
"Tell me about you. I said it about three times, Are you alright?"
"Yeah, just a bit tired." I rubbed my eyes. The lines on the road and the passing street lamps were beginning to get fuzzy.
"Well, I'll tell you about me if you answer me a question, without asking why."
"Uhh, Ok…" She responded suspiciously.
"Do you have a terminal illness?"
She looked at me weirdly.
"Please."
"No."
Is it possible they were giving us subjects unchecked?
"Get that map." I gestured to the glove compartment.
Eve reached in to the glove compartment and brought out Ferguson's map, it had several markings on it, a circle was drawn around a field, it said 'Evac site'
"We're going to the evacuation site, but we're making a detour."
"Where?" Eve asked.
"The lab?"
"What do you mean the lab?"
"Well, I am a scientist, working on this project to… resurrect people. It went wrong and look what has happened."
"Oh."
I turned left on to 3rd Street. I pulled over the car, little to no zombies were about.
"You're coming in with me." I commanded.
"No, I can fend for myself." Eve responded.
Eve pulled out Ferguson's pistol, she stepped out, "I'll stay with the car, you go do what you need."
"You can fire a gun?" I asked
She shrugged, "I'm a quick learner."
"Are you sure."
"I am."
I turned around and walked in to the NecroTech Laboratory. I made a right turn and pulled apart two panels which revealed a maintenance elevator. I went up in the elevator. I jogged to the corridor and unlocked and then opened a filing cabinet. I flicked through the hundreds of files, their numbers began to blur and unfocussed. I felt a sharp pain in my shin, it was bleeding from the fight at the gas station. I ripped off a sleeve and wrapped it around my wound.
I kept looking, I found a file named "Subject 444" I took it out and exited the building, coming out of the building, gunshots came from the car. Eve fired a bullet in to the head of a zombie before kicking another. I ran to the Humvee, as the last body slumped over, Eve steps out of the car and drops the clip on to the ground and replaces it with another.
I panted, "Are… are…"
"Am I Ok? I am. Just a few Zombies. Got what you need?"
I wave the folder in the air.
"Then let's go." She hopped in the car.
I stumbled over to the Humvee and started the engine, "How the hell… did you shoot like that? You're eight."
I sat down in the car.
She sighed, "You know, sometimes, you just can't put people in a category. I used to sneak out, spent time with my grandfather, he liked to teach me hunting. He had his own bow, but it was too big for me, he'd got me a cross bow, cross bows are much like guns."
"So you can shoot?" I asked
She nodded. "Where are we off to now?"
"Abel's Farm, Evacuation point. Closes at sunrise." I state.
The moon was high in the sky, and our destination was across town. The engine hummed away. The headlights shone on to the road, the glimmer of light illuminated a shape in the road. Soon enough the shape made a body, and then made a zombie. The ram bar of the Humvee impacted the zombie's legs, it flipped over and went over the roof. A scraping sound came from the roof like medieval swords stabbing through aluminium. A contorted face appeared at the top of the windscreen.
It was Professor Jarls'.
I put my foot on the brakes as he started to smash at the glass, he went flying forward when I braked. He got to his feet and screeched, a high pitch scream resonated throughout. Suddenly, a swathe of thousands of undead swarmed from either side of the T-junction.
"You better be good at shooting." I looked at Eve.
Eve reloaded her pistol. The Humvee roared, and charged in to the crowd. Several of them jumped up, the ones who didn't was trampled by the wheels of the car, the wheels crushed the skulls, several of them jumped on to the car.
Eve aimed her gun towards the one on the front, whose gangrenous claw was scraping the thick glass. She pulled the trigger and the bullet exploded the head of the Zombie. A bloody hand smashed at Eve's window, Eve yelled.
She looked around, she looked in the glove compartment. She closed it then flipped open the sun visor and took out a Swiss army knife and sliced open the fabric and pulled out a hunting knife.
"Always" She unsheathed it and grinned, the glass smashed and the hand grasped for her. She dug the knife in deep, there was a crack and the arm went limp. The arm was dragged away followed with a painful groan from the zombie, the arm flung about limply, hanging off the shoulder by several little strands of flesh. The other arm of that zombie swung in and clawed for her. Eve fired a bullet upwards, the zombie slid off the roof.
Another wave of zombies pounced. One of the zombies jumped on to the door.
The zombie smashed the glass, I smacked the zombie with the stock of the shotgun. Dazed, it fell to the ground
"We need a way out of this." I yelled to Eve as more zombies pounced on.
Eve looked around frantically and then grinned. "That." She pointed forward.
In front of us, was a building with scaffolding around it, It had several signs all around it and yellow and black tape. One of the signs said "Fragile Supports."
"You are one smart little girl." I grinned. I made a swerve on to the pavement, mowing down several Zombies. The Humvee rammed down the supports of the scaffolding. The car rattled and the engine started to clunk. The metal platforms began to tumble down. Some of the poles slicing an undead in half. I swung the Humvee around and drove in to the construction site's building with millions of zombies in tow.
"When I say, Jump." I looked at Eve.
"What?" Eve looked at me.
I sped towards the main column. Fumbled around for weapons in the back of the vehicle, I found a bauble-shaped object, I pulled it out, in my hand I had a grenade. Perfect!
I pulled the pin, "Jump!" The cap flew off. I threw it towards main support, it bounced off and started to fall to the ground. I leapt out of the Humvee, when I hit the ground, I heard a ringing sound in my ear. I rolled frantically to the wall. A huge ball of smoke and fire expanded out from the vehicle, the shockwave winded a few zombies. The support creaked and a tearing sound was followed by a clunk. Dust sprayed everywhere as the ceiling cracked and the right wall collapsed in to pieces, several squished some of the horde. The blood ebbed out of the bricks. I coughed, the building rumbled and pieces of brick walls and metal fell down. I staggered to my feet. The air was brown with dust and started to choke me. I stumbled towards a wall and put my hand out to stabilise myself. I shouted out "Eve!" but my yell came out in a dulled and muffled sound.
A piece of the ceiling fell down and a cement mixer tore through and the still liquid cement poured on to a zombie, enveloping them in to a cocoon and encasing them. I squinted and I could vaguely make out a dark figure, kneeling I turned the figure on to their back, it was definitely Eve, I tried to find a pulse, thankfully I had, meaning she was still alive. The files! I reached for the carcass of a car, and peered inside, it wasn't there, all that was there was charred. I sat down in despair, I shook my head. I have to keep going. Stood up and scooped up Eve. The building creaked, the final wall began to lean. I glanced behind, there was still a large amount of walking dead behind. I ran, pushed forward. My vision doubled, I lunged through blown out window. The last wall gave a giant clunk, as zombies started to clamber over the rubble. A shard of brick broke off and oscillated as it fell, it impacted a zombie's skull, bending their body backwards and slicing in to their brain. Then tumbled over on top another zombie flattening them, the wall fell in front of them, preventing their progress.
I fell to my knees. Exhausted. I looked down to Eve and she awoke.
"I'm sorry, Eve. I lost the files. I'm sorry." My eyes welled up, the only chance I had to save us, humanS, and especially my family, and I lost it in a careless action.
"No you didn't." Eve jolted me out of my thoughts.
"What?" I asked.
Eve lifted her hand in to view, on it was a charred little girl's backpack I used when I talked to the operator. Quarentine! I looked at my watch.
"It's nearly 8:30. The evacuation ends soon." I explained to Eve.
Then I heard the sound of a helicopter. "Let's go!"
I lifted Eve on to my shoulders and ran, my heart thumped like a zombie bashing through a wall. Blood pulsed in my ears. My limbs ached but I sprinted on. In the distance I saw a Chinook rise up.
My heart halted, as the Chinook flew off. Its spotlight briefly shined on a tent, revealing a remaining chinook.
Around the field was a fence, and beyond that it looked like some awkward scaffolding that stretched in a line as far as I could see. Two soldiers were at a gate in the fence. Atop the fence was Barbed wire. A soldier began to shut the gate.
"Wait!" I panted, my throat began to hurt.
The soldier opened the door slightly and I slid in.
"Sir, you're cutting it close." One of them said, his uniform had the tag "Zachariah Fletcher"
"I… know… horde…" I pointed to the street I had come from, the wall of the construction site toppled and the angry congregation spewed out, screaming, the other soldier, which I realised later wasn't a soldier, he had a police officer badge hastily attached to the shirt and the name torn off, held up a red flag. Almost instantly a firing line of soldiers, S.W.A.T and gun-wielding citizens assembled and shot at the horde. The rag tag team of firing squad was good enough to deter most of the newer zombies, fleeing in panic.
Zachariah shouted to me, "Go to the tent!" I nodded, I sprinted to the hill-top tent. My limbs were already exhausted but adrenaline from the gun shots behind allowed me to continue.
I could see the tent clearly now, it was a dark green with bullet holes and a few scratches tearing in a hole for blades of moonlight to slice down on to the muddy grassland.
There was a man who wore a beret but also an oxygen mask. His name was illegible but his rank was clear, Commander.
"Sir?" I cleared my throat.
The Commander looked at me, his hand was floating towards his gun holster. "I thought civilian evacuation already ended."
"Must've been the last ones." A soldier in the same equipment responded.
The Commander's eyes studied us closely. "The last civilian chinook helicopter is already loaded
I placed the files on to the table. "Please let us evacuate."
"What is this?" The Commander flipped over the first page,
"Patient Files, specifically, Eve."
The commander stopped he looked at me warily. "Who are you?"
I put Eve on the ground. "I'm James Carvel, I work as an assistant to Project Thanatos with NecroTech. I was there at the start of this outbreak. We were testing some new Chemicals…" My eyes drifted to the sun rise on the horizon, light tore through the earth, the clouds had went to a pink flurry like candy floss.
"What do you mean Chemicals?" The Commander breath could be heard as the oxygen mask supplied him with more, bringing a low buzzing sound.
"That's…" I hesitated, my contract forbade me to give out the information. "… I'm not allowed to tell you."
"You what?" The Commander sighed, "This is a bloody war zone, and yes, I mean bloody, the dead are rising and you care about a silly piece of paper preventing you from saying something! Who's going to sue you when you're dead?" He exclaimed.
"Fine... Project Thanatos was a project to re-animate the dead, something went wrong, very wrong and created this apocalypse, this report is about this girl, Eve. She is resistant to the sample that made this hell on earth."
The Commander paused for a second. "Test them."
Someone in a silver suit like they use for radioactivity came over to us. "Arm." Their voice was monotone.
I took out my arm and so did Eve.
The man in the Hazmat suit took out a sample of blood and then put the syringe in a machine, a few minutes later the display came up as a red square and on the other display it came up as green.
"Infected in the LZ!" The hazmat person lunged forward and scooped Eve up. In a matter of minutes, I was pinned to the ground and a gun was at my head by several soldiers
"What the hell!" I shouted.
"You're infected, you will become a zombie, we have to kill you."
"No! I've given you a way to get a cure, if you kill me now, you'll just have another zombie to fight." I shout.
The commander looked at me from above the bundle of people. "What do you suppose?"
"I don't know." I responded.
The commander sighed, "Throw him out. If he turns, kill him."
Eve looked at me as I was dragged away, I still remember her expression as she was put on to the last Chinook, and I looked from beyond the fence. Hoping that she holds the key.

Now, as I conclude this report, I await either to die and become a zombie, or a bombing run to wipe us out. The wall stands about 10 stories tall, and the only thing it contains is ravenous dead and heroes who keep themselves from turning in to Zombies with injections.
