  • Intro:

Definition of a rare event/ what i will be talking about:

    Mythical Pokemon:

Legendary Pokemon are particularly powerful pokemon that are normally only available to be caught once a game.
Mythical Pokémon is the term normally used to describe event-only legendary pokemon. The only mythical pokemon that can be caught in-game is Deoxys in ORAS.

    Illegal moves from Events:

    Event-only moves:

    5 event-only moves:
    Celebrate
    Happy Hour:
    Hold Back
    Hold Hands
    V-Create

    Shiny Locks:

Introduced in generation 5 games. Some Pokémon can not be caught shiny in-game.

Events are shiny-locked unless the event pokemon is coded to be shiny.

Some events require you to catch a Pokémon in-game once you obtain an item. Some of these are shiny locked.

There are some pokemon that cannot be shiny due to shiny locks or lack of a shiny event distribution. These are:

    Shiny and/or Hidden Ability Events:

Some pokemon cannot be caught legally in-game in their shiny forms, due to shiny locks, or have their hidden ability. However there are events where you shiny forms of a pokemon are distributed. The same applies to hidden ability events such as the Legendary Bird hidden ability trio events.

    Examples include:

Generation and location of an event distribution:

The older a pokemon event the rarer it is. This is due to people not transferring pokemon, people quitting the franchise.

some events are only distributed to a few regions. The Old Sea Map required to unlock the Mew Event in Generation 3 games was only released in Japan.

Type of event distribution (Pokemon obtained by code are rarer most of the time)

There are many different ways that Gamefreak distribute Events. When you enter the mystery gift screen you can see the various options on obtaining an event

Local Events: Attend real life pokemon events such as the VGC National Championships or Worlds and you can obtain event pokemon normally via an infra red connection. Probably the hardest events to obtain as you have to physically be at a set location to receive the event.

Code: Quite a few of the Mythical Pokemon Events as part of the 20th Pokemon Anniversary were code only events. Some required you to collect a code from a store.

Some of the events required a shared code. For those who missed the Darkrai and Hoopa giveaway in 2016 there was a second chance to obtain them by using a shared code on mystery gift.

Some other events require you to participate in battles on Pokemon Global Link to receive a code for a rare pokemon.

These can be a pain to get as not every country got codes for the 20th Anniversary Pokemon. Also not everyone battles so not every got the pokemon from the Regional Classic Competitions on Pokemon Global Link.

Via Internet: Most of the 20th Anniversary Event Pokemon were given away as online mystery gifts. These are the easiest events to obtain as you just have to be connected to the internet to obtain them.

QR Code: A new way of obtaining events started in Generation 7 with the scanning of a QR code on the pokemon website to obtain Magearna. Once the code is scanned you can receive her from a guy in Hau'Oli City.

How to obtain rare event pokemon:

HA Legendary Bird Trio: Given away as events during 2016
Shiny Mewtwo: Can be caught in-game as a shiny in pre-generation 6 games. There was a shiny HA event during 2016
    HA Mewtwo:

There was a japanese only event where you could obtain a key item called the Old Sea Map in Emerald which would allow you to go and capture Mew on Faraway Island. Once there you have a 1 in 8192 chance of encountering a shiny Mew. Pokemon Festa Convention to obatin an Old Sea Map

    HA Lugia: Dream Radar
    HA Ho-Oh: Dream Radar

    Shiny Jirachi: Through various events
Shiny Deoxys: There is only one way of obtaining this super rare pokemon. One had to obtain a key item called the aurora ticket through an event which would allow you to travel to Birth Island and encounter Deoxys in Fire Red, Leaf Green or Emerald. Shiny Manaphy: One had to obtain a Manaphy egg from a side game called Pokemon Ranger to a Generation 4 game.
Shiny Shaymin: Required a key item called Oak's Letter which could be received through Wi-Fi. Once received you could travel to Flower Paradise.
Shiny Arceus: A japanese movie event in 2016. There was an Azure Flute item in Generation 4 which gave access to the Hall or Origin but this was never released so all Shiny Arceus's with that location are illegitimate.

    HA Kami Trio: Dream Radar
