I have a primarina, toucannon, magneton, Pikachu, slowbro, and a rufflet. I'm currently at Mallows trial. Do I need a team change?

Notices a lot of type overlap: 2 Electric types, 2 Normal/Flying, 2 Water types, and 2 Psychic types (eventually). Do you need a team change? No. Could probably still win. Applies doubly so if you actually have Primarina and not Brionne. (Implies a huge level advantage over Mallow's Trial.) Is it more optimal to have different Pokemon? Yes.

Would recommend dropping Slowpoke and Rufflet, at minimum. Evolves Rufflet at level 54, which is near the Elite Four. Already has a slow Water type in Primarina, albeit not a physically defensive one. Drops you down to only two Electric weaknesses, but no good answer to it.

For some Pokemon options, perhaps Mudbray? Performs quite well with the Stamina ability. Handles physical threats well (of which there are many).

Sees no strong answer for Normal, Psychic, or Ghost types. Puts Alolan Grimer forward as an option. Becomes available soon-ish. Handles two of those, on top of being a second Grass answer. Admittedly makes Ground quite scary for your team, once again. Is also yet another slow Pokemon on the team.

    Some more decent Pokemon:
    • Tsareena with Trop Kick. Lowers Attack with each hit.
    • Arcanine with Intimidate. A good all-arounder, plus Intimidate.
    • Stoutland/Tauros. Two more good Intimidate Pokemon. Becomes stronger once you find Return.
    • Salazzle. A solid choice for sweeping with Nasty Plot and good natural speed. Watch your number of Ground weaknesses with this one.

One more note: Did not say to drop either Magneton or Pikachu. Certainly could. Personally found Magneton quite good in Alola, even with the late evolution. Learned to appreciate Pokemon like Pikachu as support in Alola. Shuts down totems quickly between Charm and Nuzzle. (Solves a lot of problems with Toxic instead, admittedly, but what fun is that?) Functions as a sweeper with Nasty Plot too.

Views Rowlet as okay, but nothing special. Lacks the Speed to make Swords Dance shine. Still learns Swords Dance, nevertheless. Will not get its unique Z-Crystal until postgame. Receives Sucker Punch, on the plus side. Can be nice with its unimpressive Speed. Handles Ground and Psychic types well. Is not too shabby versus Electric either.
