It's just for completion's sake, so you can "get all the glitch pokemon". I believe Abby has the non-buffed Absol stats (since absol was buffed for this game).

It worked fine in the original copy, so I think it may be related to the patch itself. But it seems that the workaround is in fact not fighting all the trainers in the gym. So long as the light doesn't clear completely it seems not to cause the glitch.

The game is not supposed to freeze there, can you tell me what emulator and rom-base you are using?

I'm not entirely sure how that happened, but you don't need cut to progress. So while a bit odd, it's not technically an issue. I forgot to leave my note about that! Due to the nature of how they were added they don't like the Pokédex much and will glitch if you don't already have them...
