I dunno what they told you.. I've never taken any art classes in my life.. (Seriously) What I do is, I begin with the lighter darks first, then the darker ones. Always starting from the dark corners mainly. I think I ought to post more drawings, since this one is like a year old from now.

No. You also have art theory and references at your disposal. Without something to guide you, practice would be futile. You can't try something without first knowing how to try it.
