[Other] Am I doing this right?

I'm new to ROM hacking and would like to have a go. However I'm not sure If i'll be "biting off more then I can chew" hence this post. I would like to have a hand at creating new routes, trainers, story-arcs etc. If others can suggest other simple things I can quickly learn and practice. Please share.

The plan

I wish to do something simple.
- Add a fully functioning route east of Viridain city
-Including Trainers / Items
-Including a Strength puzzle
-One off Battle with a (Magmar?)

-A Mine (on end of the route)
- Strength Puzzle?
- Create a side quest
-The miners are on strike, however the bosses have recruited Strikebreakers (Scabs), the miners ask the protagonist to descend into the mine (possible lift?) and to battle the Scabs about 4 in total and their leader (a mere rocket grunt). After beating the leader the scabs shall flee and in return the protagonist shall be gifted a experience share (or some other useful item). However it shall be optional.

- Adjust Brock's team to compensate for the extra experience the protagonist
- Lv12 Ryhorn?

So considering the plan outlined above, is it worth me (a beginner) to create such a Hack? Is there anything I've overlooked/missed?
