Problem A is that I can already see this becoming a "What the hell Game Freak?" article that usually turns into a rant. I've always been against posting wishlists and complaint lists to Daily, so
please make sure this doesn't become one.
I also ask that you remember to look at the other side of the situation, i.e. Game Freak's. The reason the OG 151 are overpresent recently is because they are the OG 151. Nearly every person under the age of like 25 has at least seen a Pok?mon game, and for the oldest members of that group their childhood memories are of Charmander and Venusaur, not Kecleon or Galvantula. I know genwunners are a minority here and I'm certainly not one of them, but they still exist.
The point is,
everyone has heard of Charizard, and not nearly as many have heard of Emboar. Thus, people want to play the game with Charizard in it. The TCG has been doing the same thing (see: Generations, Evolutions), and there was a huge upspike in people asking where they could get a Charizard card 3 weeks after GO released. At least from my observation, Evolutions sold waaaaaaay better than it should have because the set was awful from a competitive standpoint because people valued the nostalgia.
Lastly, the nostalgia factor I imagine goes around Game Freak HQ as well. In the end, they are the ones deciding who goes in what games, and if they like Blastoise more than Torterra then they will add Blastoise to their game instead of that other turtle starter.
So this was really a really ranty reply to basically say "There are reasons for the Kanto spam".
To reply to your specific things listed above (my replies are bolded):
Soapbox
-Kalos doesn't even hide it with giving you the Kanto starters outright - Ok can't deny that.
-Charizard getting 2 megas just for being the preferred choice of genwunners and Mewtwo getting 2 because of muh first movie and how much genwunners liked it - Same here. I actually do like how this went though, as each one of them got a Physical version and a Special version.
-Santalune Forest = Viridian Forest - Santalune had those annoying friends though :P
-ALOLA FORMS BEING LOCKED TO GEN 1 that stuff really annoyed me - And here is where the argument breaks down. Your use of the term "locked" bothers me. Yes, all of the Pok?mon that received regional variants in Sun and Moon originated in Kanto. However, besides all the points I made above, you have to consider that because they are the oldest, they were the most in need of a fresh coat of paint. Sandslash, despite being one of my fav mons, is boring as hell by modern standards. Muk was literally a pile of sludge. Meowth probably would have been a Dark type if that was a thing in Gen 1. Golem was literally a rock, now it is a rock with an electrocannon. Rattata has inspirational reasons for getting an Alolan variant, which I expand on below.
-I get it's the 20th anniversary but what about the rest of the series - the rest of the series isn't 20 years old yet.
-could bring up how fans ask for a lot of Gen 2 stuff as well? I'm not too sure on this point Similar reasoning as the gen 1 stuff: nostalgia.
-They put all this effort into pandering into Gen 1, but when fans of Gen 3 wanted their remake they got what was arguably barebones ORAS was more well done than FRLG, fight me.
-They just used Gen 1 legends instead of making new legends in XY, though that could be considered for the best due to legendary oversaturation They would have been in ORAS anywayyyyy
Statistics
-109 Kanto or Kanto-related Pokemon out of 301 - In what dex?
-Over 30% - See above
-not even 60 pokemon in the alola dex and you can count 30 gen 1 or gen 1 related mons - The alola dex is HUGE.
-Encounters skewed heavily towards Gen 1. I'll reply to these individually
-Hano Grand Resort; Staryu 80%, Sandygast 20% in sand traps. Those things that Sandygast and Palossand make - Ok yeah this one was nuts.
-Mimikyu is only 5% compared to Golbat and Haunter in the abandoned Megamart - Mimikyu was designed to be a rare Pok?mon. Even if that was Banette instead of Hauntzer, it still likley would have been a similar ratio.
-The nighttime counterpart to the local region derp is even a Gen 1 mon - THERE IS ACTUALLY INSPIRATION FOR THIS!!!!! LIKE, THE INTERACTION BETWEEN ALOLAN RATATTA AND YUNGOOS IS ACTUALLY ONE OF THE BEST-WRITTEN POK?MON INSPIRATIONS! It also was the best way to represent something that actually happened in Hawaiian history. Rats and other small rodents thrived in Hawaii,
but then the mongoose was introduced to the region. It was a natural predator for the rodents (specifically their eggs), and reduced their population dramatically. However, the mongoose only hunted during the day. Thus, the rats and mice and such became nocturnal to counteract this. This is one of the best examples of natural selection in the world, and Game Freak did a good job incorporating it.
-If you were to count any other gen's original mons you'd be hard pressed to find much that compare to Kanto in the Alola dex - Again, you're not wrong here.
-Over 100 of the Kalos dex was Kanto, but in its defense the Kalos dex is a gargantuan dex - Every Pok?mon introduced by that point was available in at least one of the four 6th Gen games. All of them. Like, the existence of ORAS ruins any argument that can be made about Gen 6 being Gen 1 biased.
Other notes
-mention I don't want Gen 1 to burn or something - Smart
-point out how easy it would be to treat Gen 1 with respect while not forgetting other gens - Oh yeah,
let's make the Alolan and Kalos Pok?dexes EVEN BIGGER! That's a great idea! WAIT NO.
-mention other Alola form ideas that could've happened if the idea wasn't restricted - NO! Save that for other articles.
