  • Ever thought of yourself as a budding Satoshi Tajiri or Junichi Masuda? Seen some of the dreck that Nintendo have released as spinoffs and said 'I could do better than that'? Well here's your chance to put your money where your mouth is. (Not literally, of course. That would be silly. It would taste horrible, for one…)

The aim of this contest is to unearth the best ideas for a potential Pokémon spinoff game. We've all seen – and some of us have played – the likes of Snap, Pinball, Mystery Dungeon et al, but what are the games you would WANT to play in the future? Pikachu gunning down some Cold War Soviets? A Sims-style game featuring the adventures of Professor Oak? A full-on Zelda-style action adventure game? Here's your chance to let your creativity run free and create basics of your very own game.

Got your attention? Your interest piqued? Salivating for more info? Well, keep reading, as the rules and important information are to follow below:

    1. The contest will run from the posting of this thread to May 25th at midnight EST (UTC-4). A winner will be determined before the end of the month.
    2. Please post your entries in this thread. PMs will not be accepted.
    3. Any type of game can be created, so long as it's not a sequel to or based off an already existing game. So no creating Pokémon Snap 2, as much as I would love it.
    4. Use the format set out below to submit your entry.
    5. The judges will be myself and Sydian. No bribing either of us!
    6. Entries will be judged on their creativity and how well they capture the spirit of Pokémon. (Yes, that's vague and nebulous. Just make it good!)
    7. The prize(s) will be determined closer to the time. Emblems are a possibility.

    -~-~-~

Entry format (Please use this when submitting your entries)

Title: A good, relevant, snappy title can go a long way.
Brief description: Emphasis on 'brief'; describe the bare bones of your game.
Platform: Is this to be a console game, a handheld, something else, or all of the above? Nintendo or other?
Genre: Put down however many you feel your game represents, be it shoot-em-up, puzzle, MMORPG or any other genre.
Rating: Use whatever ratings system you're comfortable with, or just give us an idea of the age-range of your game.
Single-player description: Describe the basis, format and plot of the single-player element of your game in detail. If your game doesn't have much of a traditional plot, write what you feel best describes the basis and format of your game. If your game doesn't have a single-player element, leave this blank.*
Multi-player description: The same as above, but for the multi-player element.*
Characters: List the playable characters in your game, important NPCs and/or partners whether human, Pokémon or something else
Internet connectivity: Describe how, if at all, your game will connect with others around the world.
Other: If you'd like to say anything else about your game, here's some space to do so.

*These will make up the bulk of the entry. Please be as detailed as possible; the more creative and inventive, the better!

    -~-~-~

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask myself or Sydian. To everyone else, good luck and happy creating! :D

The Guilds work against one another and members of opposite guilds can do battle with one another.

Each Armor and Weapon has specified HP that can be depleated. Once they have, the Armor and Weapon breaks and cannot be used in battle until repaired.

    Title: Pokémon Breeders

Brief description: You are in charge of your own Day Care Centre, and you have to keep it running by raising Pokémon.

Platform: Nintendo 3DS, although PC would be better (bigger screen)

    Genre: Business simulation

    Rating: 8+

Single-player description: You have just been put in charge of a Day Care Centre, whose capacity is about 20 Pokémon. You need to construct rooms for facilities that will help the Centre, as well as manage the nearby plot of land where the Pokémon spend their time. To do this, you will need to hire good staff, each of whom can be qualified in different areas of Pokémon Breeding.

Once you have turned your Centre into a good place for trainers to leave their Pokémon, it's off to the next Day Care Centre to improve that! There are roughly 4 Centres per region, and 5 regions, so about 20 levels altogether (the first is a tutorial level where Brock helps you get to grips with what to do).

As you progress through the levels, you unlock many features. Features include:

    • The capacity of your current Day Care Centre increases throughout the game.
    • A wide variety of rooms, such as: specialised training/grooming rooms, breeding rooms, computer database, teleporter, scanner, kitchen, clinic, ball/egg storage, reception. Each room can be upgraded with better equipment and/or larger capacity.
    • The amount of land (and thus your Centre's capacity) increases through the levels. You can do some landscaping to provide terrain for all kinds of Pokémon, and change the proportions of each kind of terrain if you need to. Later on, you can also buy additional land.
    • When a trainers drops off their Pokémon for you to look after, they will request different things (and only return/pay when those requests have been fulfilled). Requests include: "gain X levels", "evolve to Z", "increase Cuteness", "improve obedience", "learn a particular move", "teach a trick", "change nature", etc. Combinations of these also occur later on. You will be paid extra for fulfilling optional requests as well as the mandatory ones.
    • A Day Care Centre needs lots of different staff: Handymen keep the machines working, Move Tutors specialise in teaching moves (their movelist depends on the state of your database room), Groomers improve contest stats, Chefs prepare food (cheaper than importing it, which you'll have to do at the start), Vets heal Pokémon (cheaper than sending them to the PokéHospital), Freelancers work outside the Centre and occasionally bring in Pokémon/eggs for you to keep/sell. These staff also need to be kept happy and paid.
    • You can sell Pokémon/eggs if you're running out of space. You can only sell Centre-owned Pokémon/eggs, of course! Better-raised Pokémon and well-documented Eggs sell better (the scanner room provides the documentation), but offering "Mystery Eggs" is good for a cheap buck.
    • You control the price of your services. You can get away with charging a bit more if you have a good reputation.
    • Pokémon can get up to all kinds of mischief with each other, such as bullying, covertly breeding, hogging certain terrain, and even escaping!
    • Occasional visits from Health & Safety officials and What Breeder? magazine, which can either boost or damage your reputation depending on the state of your Centre. Bad results here can also lead to fines.
    • The local evil groups (Team Rocket et al.) start to notice your work, and try to bully you into giving them money and rare Pokémon. If you resist, they may attack!
Multi-player description: The same as single player mode, but now you're competing with up to three rival Day Care Centres! Can you hire the best staff, buy the best land, and attract the wealthiest clients before your opponents do?

This isn't just passive competition, though. You could sabotage your rivals by messing with their equipment or land, or even engage in bacteriological warfare by infecting their Pokémon with viruses. Of course, they can also do the same to you, so be careful or you'll have an epidemic of the dreaded exper. drainuenza on your hands!

As implied, you can have up to 4P games. Game settings include win conditions (best state after a fixed time, or first to achieve a specific goal), the size of the Centres, complexity of requests, initial money, and more.

Characters: You are a disembodied cursor. Brock makes a guest appearance in the tutorial level. Evil teams also crop up occasionally. A certain shorts-liking Youngster may also make a cameo. You'll see a multitude of Pokémon pass through your doors before the game is finished.

Internet connectivity: You can search for multiplayer games to join via the Internet, or start games of your own for others to join. You can have a friends list, and search for games just with those people. You can also share your single/multiplayer scores with others.

Other: This idea was influenced by Theme Hospital, so it would have the same basic feel. Pokémon are different than they are in the official games, e.g. they can know tricks, change their nature, have no limit on the number of moves they can know, take time to learn a move, etc.

Brief description: After the humans have left the world,
    Platform: XBox, Wii, Ps3, Pc
    Genre: RPG
    Rating: e10+ (violence)
Single-player description: There are different kingdoms ruled by different legendary pokemon, they do not want to directly fight the other rulers or else it would tear up the world, so instead they hire you, a lone Smearle to do their dirty work for them. You do different quests for them and the citizens of their kingdom and as a reward different attacks become available. Physical attacks would be like main weapons and Spec Atks would be like magic. You start in a cave being rained by Terrakion, Verizion and Cobalion and before you leave they teach your your starter move, Sacred Sword. From their you can choose where you want to go and who you want to help. You can also get a partner that will battle along side you and the partner is usually one of the starter pokemon but there can be others. Quest types include sabotage of another ruler's war equipment, capturing gang leaders, defending villages and going to battle.
Multi-player description: Free for all battles or team battles in the arenas around the different locations, teams determined on "level" of character. Different arensa types indlude water, beach, forest, volcano, etc.

Other NPCs are other pokemon including the ones you battle, the NPCs with major roles are either legendary pokemon, or pseudo legendary pokemon.

  • Title: Pokémon Clash: Rebellion
Brief description: You are a Pokémon in this 2D Side-Scrolling (similar to Subspace Emissary) fighting adventure where the player goes along defeating Pokémon level after level, gaining experience and learning new moves and combos. Contains 3D boss battles.
Platform: Wii U and Nintendo 3DS
    Genre: Fighting
    Rating: E10+
Single-player description: The humans who live in Northern Chubu have always been rather distant from the Pokémon living in the south, but when they realize they can harness their powers to battle each other, they begin to attack and capture the wild Pokémon. The wild Pokémon begin to form a resistance. Unfortunately, the humans are using the Pokémon they captured against the resistance. The player wants to join in the uprisings against the humans, but he is branded too weak by Commander Alakazam. So he runs away and makes some friends along the way, fighting Pokémon sent by the human's armies and getting stronger. The player can convert some defeated enemies to join his/her team, and can find items along the way to help with his long trek (such as berries, TMs, and held items). The player can choose what 6 Pokémon to lead the battle at the start of each level, and if they are defeated they are returned to the nearest town.
Multi-player description: Trading team members with friends, necessary to evolve Pokémon such as Haunter and Seadra. Also contains a Super Smash Brothers like multiplayer mode where players can battle their own Pokémon or use unlockable default characters with set levels and movesets.
    Characters:
    • Nameable main character, one of 30 base evolution Pokemon decided by personality quiz at beginning of game. Possibilities include Eevee, Aron, Magby, etc.
    • Max, raucous joker, hot-headed same-gendered best friend of the main character. Player chooses between one of the Hoenn starters.
    • Kay, shy but very intelligent in battle strategy, opposite-gendered childhood friend of the main character. Player chooses between one of the Johto starters.
    • Jacob (Alakazam), the young, cold brilliant commander of the Pokémon of the resistance against humans.
    • Other baddies along the way, including Scraggy, Absol, Darumakka, and Giratina
Internet connectivity: Required to trade between Wii U console games as well as GTS for trading online internationally. Multiplayer 1 on 1, with leaderboards. Battlers would receive points to be used to buy powerful items, TMs, evolution items, and eggs in game, but this would not be the only way to receive these.
Other: Pokémon could have up to 4 moves, which would function very similarly to how they do in the main series games. Due to the nature of this game, PP would be nonexistent. Abilities and stats would function almost completely like they do in game (Drizzle summons rain on the battle field, Technician boosts weaker Base Power moves) Terrain would very much affect a Pokémon's ability to fight. Fish-like Pokémon would suffer decreased mobility on land, Fire-type Pokémon are weaker underwater, etc.

    Title: Pokemon Turmoil
Brief description: Similar gameplay to that of Starcraft II but with a little bit of customization for more variety.
Platform: Probably PC, although having it on the new Wii U would be cool
    Genre: Real-time strategy and action
Rating: Between E and E10+, although it would probably lean more towards E
Single-player description: The campaign would consist of an chaotic Orre-like region, having a Trainer who would lead the armies, and a few baby Pokemon such as Caterpie (harvester), Riolu (builder), and Pidgey (scouter). You build up armies in each mission of the campaign to complete the required task, like defeating a Rival Trainer or finding the location of a Legendary. There would also be type advantages as well as customization between unit stats to add another layer of strategy. You later find out that Arceus is angry at the humans so you must work your way through many challenges to stop him. What will face you on the way? (Multiple paths so the story is different and exciting for everyone.
Multi-player description: Similar gameplay to a singleplayer Rival mission, onlyit's not a CPU Rival, it's another player. Also, multiplayer would have a Capture the Flag mode, which would definitely be very fun with Pokemon :D
    Characters:
Nameable trainer: Main character you control, leads your armies into battle.
Rival: Challenges you at times along your journey to Arceus to test your abilities.
Arceus: Main antagonist, is causing havoc throughout the region.
Internet connectivity: Connecting for multiplayer games, can join lobbies of people for games of Capture the Flag.
Other: I got nothing :/ Sorry. Looking at mine compared to others mine looks way short xD

    Power-Ups
Whirlwind (Flying): This power up will send your opponents in a spin and manoeuvre them off course for a few seconds.
Ice Beam (Ice): This power up will send a beam of ice to the player infront casting them in a freeze stopping them right in their tracks!

Attract (Normal): With this lovely power up the opponent who is ahead of you will quickly become infatuated by you and allow you to pass leaving them immobile for a short time.
Fly (Flying): You will call upon your best friend, Pidgeot who will guide you to the lead leaving all your opponents trailing behind you! (This can only be obtained when in 10th or 9th position)

Title: Pokemon: Wisps and the Willows
Brief description: A crossover game, having you go into classic literature, to save the Pokemon-remade storybooks from evil pokemon
Platform: Intended to be a game for 3DSware
    Genre: Adventure, Crossover,
    Rating: G (8+)
Single-player description: You play as a Snivy named Ive. When one day, Ive's friend Turnparro (a Tepig) calls him to a hut where the great professor lives, they find nothing but a storybook and a teleporter. When they enter, they find themselves in the story of Snow White, with Pokemon taking the main roles. An evil Blaziken known as Commander Blane is attempting to ruin the classic literature. The characters Ive and Turnparro must go through the levels in a children's action RPG, following the story of 6 different books: Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, A Christmas Carol, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Multi-player description: Action battle arenas, with 12 arenas - 2 based on each book available.
Characters: Ive and Turnparro are the main characters (you control Ive), and the main enemy is Blane. The other important characters are the story's characters replaced by Pokemon.
Internet connectivity: You can fight in the arenas over internet connection.
Other: You cannot recruit other party members like Mystery Dungeon. Puzzles are Zelda-like (item based) and the combat is simplified for younger children. A harder type with more detailed combat called 'Wisps in the Willows Advance Type' would be released later.

  • Title: Pokemon: Wild Connection Collection (a little long?)
Brief description: A description of the game would be like the new Spyro Skylanders action figure/game with a touch of WoW just for pokemon, 650 pokemon characters that you can collect, train, battle etc. in a realm with everyone else playing as wild pokemon throughout different regions
Platform: All platforms from XBox 360 to the DSs dependant on the platform you are using will determine which region you are in
    Genre:MMORPG/action, adventure
Rating: I would like to say E, but considering that it would have to go through the internet it would be rated a little higher
Single-player description: Single player mode would be just going around by yourself and completing tasks, collecting items, being able to transfer your pokemon to the current generation of original Pokemon, but there is no deleting the action figure/resetting unless it is back into the software. Shinies would be similar to it is now based on different things on each console, etc. probably a lot more difficult to actually obtain on, same as IVs and EVs are based on what you level up yourself not based on what you battle, so a little more choice in what your doing.
Multi-player description: You can team up with other people/pokemon to accomplish tougher goals/tasks and competions/battles against others. You can build different villages for yourself other than the "Pokemon Cities" scattered around the regions but this would take a lot of resources(berries used as currency and different items that pokemon normally have on them) hence multiplayer aspect.
Internet connectivity: I think this is self explanatory, but I will clarify complete and utter connectivity everything and everyone is based in the internet, but you still have a physical version of your pokemon
Other: This would be the ultimate pokemon experience not only does it cross-over platforms, but you can actually use them in the current version of the games, competively training your pokemon in realtime and actually bonding with it through being it and experience its wildness survival and enhancement.

PS: if this actually becomes a reality I want my royalties. You seen it first here!! LOL!

  • Pokemon Tornado

    Title: Pokemon Tornado
Brief description: 1 on 1 3D enviroment fighting game It would be more focused on how they battle close-range, psychic types can do combos too!(like Naruto ninja storm or Dissidia). Fight as a Pokemon! Pull of combos with basic close-range attacks (random punches headbutts...combos) and special secondary attacks (thunder fire blast). Once you have lost enough health, you can temporarily evolve and try to turn the tables.
    Platform: Wii (Wii U)
    Genre: Combat
Rating: E-10 or less (because cartoons these days are just as violent.)
Single-player description: You are a trainer BUT you play as pokemon while outside the arena. Level up your pokemon as you battle your way to the top, unlocking special moves of course.

    gameplay:
    - Use weaker basic attacks (by button smashing short combos).
    - Use stronger but limited special attacks (assigned to a button).
    - Specials can be super effective etc.
    - Specials can be used with sufficient mana or PP, not basics.
    - Assists can help out.

Multi-player description: Battling, replay exchange, Tournaments.
Characters: Our favorite pokemon, such as starters, especially fighting types and legendaries. No HUGE wailord and onix-like pokemon. Plus not a soul cares about pokemon like mothim, exclude the uglies.
Internet connectivity: Replay exchange would be great.
Other: You can jump and run around the arena. Obstacles like small hills, trees, houses etc will fill the arena.
Pokemon can not be immune to any moves, instead they are not very effective. Pokemon that can not evolve would just get a temporary power up when their health goes down, instead of evolving. Usually a Machamp would not have many long ranged attacks, so their specials would involve leaping across the map or using earthquake etc.

This probably will not be a real game. The animation for combos would take forever to make for each pokemon.

  • Title: Pokemon - The Leaders Tale
Brief description: You've fought them, you've beat them. Now it's time to be one! You are a rookie trainer that was one day offered the chance of being a pokemon gym leader! Now work your way through the ranks with your chosen type and aim for that all time high, the Elite Four!
Platform: Nintendo DS/ With 3DS compatibility
Genre: I'd say Adventure in a way.
    Rating: 7+
Single-player description: You start off at a screen offering you to choose a pokemon type. If you choose ALL ROUNDER then you will have the chance to raise all the types, with limitations. Once you have chosen it you will get a choice of one pokemon. It will be level 15. You will then be taken to your first gym in which trainers come in to battle you. If you manage to beat off 5 in a row then you will be promoted to a higher gym and get the choice of another pokemon. Your original pokemon will have the chance to learn new moves and it will now be 5 - 10 levels higher. Then 6 trainers come in and if you win you are promoted again. If you manage to become part of the Elite Four, you will have a full team and if you can beat 15 challengers then you will be offered the chance to fight the champion. If you win, that's game over. Post game - You are the Champion, you have to hold yourself off against all the challengers that come your way. Good Luck!
Multi-player description: The chance to download new pokemon for your team or new moves. Also put your team against others across the world!

Characters: There would be a variety of characters since you will be leading different gyms.
    Internet connectivity: Wi-Fi
Other: If at anytime you don't like your team you have one chance, and only one chance in the entire game to change it without forfeiting the game. And if you think you'll be stuck in the gym constantly, then no. You have to travel to each gym before you can lead it. This will give the chance to socialise and train your team up. You will have the possibility of catching pokemon. Maybe.

  • Since I can't say PMD4 or a PMD2 remake...

    Title: Pokémon: Futures Past
Brief description:Pokémon reimagined as a Final Fantasy-style JRPG. (No humans, only Pokémon. Kind of like Mystery Dungeon.)
    Platform: 3DS
    Genre: Eastern RPG
    Rating: T
Single-player description: Since directly aping Square Enix is a bad idea, the battle system will obviously be a bit different. Kind of like EarthBound, but without the rolling HP bar. (To make it seem less like classic Dragon Quest, multiple enemies will appear on screen at a time, which is why I said EarthBound and not Mother.) Party size is 6. All 649 Pokémon are playable, including the possibility of duplicates. Every move from the main series is incorporated into the game.
Multi-player description: Full parties of 6 battling each other, plus a bonus Smash Bros.-style mode. This also applies to online battles.
Characters: The party will be shuffled a lot, like in Final Fantasy IV. While the game is rated T, there will be no deaths. The main villain is Darkrai, as the only species that has been portrayed as truly evil. While all bosses will join your party once defeated, the only plot-required legendary is Darkrai. (The starting party, BTW, is Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander.)
Internet connectivity: All multiplayer modes will be available online as well.
Other: The title refers to the idea of a timeline that is formed in a circle, with no beginning nor end. This will be a major plot point. Also, there will be no 3D models, only sprites. The stereoscopic 3D will be used exclusively for visual effects such as earthquakes. Finally, there will be special connectivity with Wii U to display the game on a television.
