  • The Fortune Cup 2023

Welcome once again to the annual Fortune Cup! Here victory is cash and capitalism is king. The Fortune Cup is a different breed of battling competition than your typical OU or VGC tournaments. Here, not only will your skills in battle be tested, but so will your luck, your resource management and your ability to make do with what you get. But, as always, the wealthier you are the more you can twist the odds in your favour.

    How This Works

If you want to join the fun, just post in the thread saying you're in. After that, you will be RNGd eight Pokemon you can use to make your team or teams. That's where things get exciting, because your Pokemon could be literally anything. You might find you get your hands on an uber like Rayquaza or Arceus, or you might have the misfortune of RNGing a Caterpie or Sunkern.

You can use those eight random Pokemon in any configurations you want and with any EVs, IVs, moves or Ability's you want (as long as they can legally have them). We'll be playing in the Anything Goes tier which means, fittingly, all the gimmicks of the ages are at your disposal. That means that Terastalization, Z-Moves and Mega-Evolution will all be available to you (with certain restrictions). Unfortunately, Dynamax is not available.

You may be wondering, with the RNG element, what that means for you if all eight Pokemon you RNG are bad. Never fear, both I and the free market have your back! Firstly, at least two of your starting eight Pokemon are guaranteed to be in the Scarlet and Violet UU or OU tiers. Secondly, by battling others you will earn special Arc Coins thanks to our "benevolent" deity. Battling someone on the other GT team will earn you 50 coins for a win or 25 for a loss. Meanwhile, battling someone on your team will earn you 25 coins for a win but none if you lose. Between battles, you can PM/DM me and spend coins at the Exchange Corner (as shown below) to do things like access gimmicks, evolve team members or get new Pokemon entirely. Additionally, every three losses you experience, you can ask me to RNG you another Pokemon free of charge. Be careful how you spend your coins though, because the winner of the Fortune Cup is the one who is richest at the end!

At times, you can expect to see some special events pop up in the the thread too. Depending on what you do during those events, you may unlock free Pokemon, earn bonus coins or be less fortunate and suffer something more detrimental instead.

Please keep in mind, the best chance at victory you have is to battle as much as possible. There's no limit to the number of times you can battle someone, and the more you battle the more coins you earn and the more chances you have to obtain better Pokemon. You do need to keep track of your wins and losses and your coin total in a single post in this thread though. Anything else will not be counted.

The Fortune Cup will run through August 12th - August 27, 11:59 p.m. EST

    Battle Rules

While technically the Fortune Cup uses the Gen 9 National Dex Anything Goes format, to keep things fair and balanced, we'll be including some special clauses more akin to Ubers.

    - Sleep Clause: You may only put a single member of your opponent's party to sleep at a time.
    - Evasion Clause: You may not use Double Team or Minimize.
    - OHKO Clause: OHKO moves like Fissure and Sheer Cold are banned.
    - Endless Battle Clause: You cannot force a battle that can't end without someone forfeiting.

Additionally, there are some additional Fortune Cup specific rules.

    - You cannot Terastalize and use a Z-Move in the same battle.
    - Your Pokemon are assumed to have either their primary or secondary type as their Tera type unless a new type is purchased. Once a type is purchased any Pokemon on your team can use it.

All battles are to be had on Main Battle Server Lobby in Pokemon Showdown and are best of one. Let's keep those coins flowing fast, it's better for the market. You must provide replay links to your battles when recording your wins and losses in this thread.

    Get-Together Points

As said previously, placement in the Fortune Cup is determined by how many coins you have at the end. Here's what you earn for your team for participating and placing!

Participation (at least three battles): 10 pts
    Third Place: 50 pts
    Second Place: 100 pts
    First Place: 150 pts

In addition to the above, you may also earn GT points through the below Achievements.

Money, Money, Money: Earn 20 pts by being the first to have more than 500 Arc Coins.
Riches to Rags: Earn 20 pts by being the first to spend 250 or more Arc Coins in one go.
Rags to Riches: Earn 50 pts by being the first to reach 500 or more Arc coins, after having spent at least 250 prior.

  • Well, this event didn't exactly play out as it's meant to, but points are points! Thanks for participating.

    3rd: Arcaneum (Gears) - 50 pts
    2nd: Apro (Gears) - 100 pts
    1st: 5qwerty (Apricorns) 150 pts

Factoring in participation points from those who met the requirements, that's 170 pts for Gears and 170 pts for Apricorns.
