I just had a battle tree battle where a loppuny was holding a toxic orb for no reason

Like colours said, it's probably Switcheroo Lopunny (which is how you found out, I guess). Lopunny can have the Ability Klutz, so it can't "use" its hold item (meaning it won't get Badly Poisoned by Toxic Orb).

I encountered it too, was confused for a second, but it wasnt able to use (or didnt have) switcheroo.

Perhaps one of its moves was Facade?

there are some weird battle tree sets. i mean, didn't we have shell smash kommo-o when. it can't even learn shell smash.

It could have also known either Trick or Fling. I don't know what one this specific Lopunny would have known however.
