The Pokéball arced through the air, a blur of red and white. Upon hitting the ground, the spherical capsule opened; a glowing aura escaped. Definition rapidly appeared, the glowing matter stretching into a torso, limbs, a head. Within seconds, humanoid creature strode forth. It stood a cut under five foot, with yellow skin, spindly limbs and a vast head which was entirely disproportionate to the rest, sporting a fantastic moustache. The torso and shoulders were plated with brown scales. There was a look of supreme confidence in the pale blue eyes. In a surprisingly deep voice, it roared a challenge. "Ala-ka-ZAM!".

A second Pokeball followed the first, tossed from the other side of the vast arena. A titanic behemoth erupted in a sheen of brilliance. Legs and arms the size of iron girders, a tail flailing around like some beached leviathan. Horns erupting along the line of the back, pushing through scaled purple skin, atop the head of the beast. A hint of teeth in that heavy jaw, a hint of biting and serrating and severing and chewing. It bellowed back, a ululation which echoed around the stadium. "Ni. Do. KIIIING."

Lyall was by now so close to the screen of his television that his nose was practically pressed against the glass. The Alakazam looked so frail compared to the Nidoking, it couldn't possibly be a fair fight. But... the Alakazam was Enoch's. And Enoch never lost.

There he was, standing at the end of the arena behind his Alakazam, atop the trainer stand. Enoch was impressive in every possible way. He gave the impression of a hunter. Sharp features, brilliant blue eyes. No excess weight, but just enough muscle to suggest a barely concealed strength. A brilliant strategist, too. Lyall dreamed of being Enoch. Now Pokémon Masters Champion for five years, since he'd burst onto the scene at the age of 16. They say he'd never been beaten. There was something almost inhuman about him. Humans have flaws.

His opponent was equally recognisable. Coren Attwood, world ranking 4th. Short, tousled brown hair. Specialised in heavy-hitters, tended to play aggressively but capable of surprising switch ups which could catch opponents unaware. They'd certainly caught the last few people he'd battled, as he'd made it to the final. Since Enoch's entrance to the Masters, that was about as good as anyone could get.

"Nidoking, use Earthquake! Follow through with Flamethrower!" The Nidoking immediately assented, raising a foot, before dropping it to the ground. A shockwave surged through the earth towards Alakazam, the ground rippling and groaning in its wake. Alakazam was thrown back, but deftly landed on its feet. A torrent of flame followed, bursting from Nidoking's mouth as it exhaled the inferno. Alakazam, however, was no longer there. Nidoking abruptly stopped, surprise evident.

Lyall gasped. How the...? Enoch's Alakazam must know Teleport! But where was it now?

"Alakazam, use Esper Surge!" Enoch's voice was calm. Nidoking froze, spun around, but it was too late. Alakazam's eyes were already filled with that strange, alien purple glow, that spoke of minds and thoughts and consciousness beyond the reach of man, a psyche shaped into knife. Alakazam held out a hand, fingers stretched towards the Nidoking, and Nidoking roared in agony as the souls rushed across his mind, tearing everything apart. The mighty behemoth swayed once, twice, then collapsed to the ground with a dull crunch.

"And that's quite enough for tonight. I'm sure you've seen that one before, anyway."

The screen flicked off, replacing the fainted Nidoking with black. Lyall spun around to see his mother.

    "What was that for?"

"Lyall, it's 3 AM. You have such an important day tomorrow, you should go and sleep."

    "You know I can't sleep."

His mother sighed. "At least go to your room. We can't sleep, the TV is too loud."

Lyall grudgingly got up. She was right, he'd watched the 2017 Shussei Open final at least twice before, but it was such a fantastic match. It wasn't like he was going to sleep. After all, tomorrow...

Tomorrow he would get his first Pokémon.
