The Sahtu Region
Introduction
So this region is for a ROMhack I recently started codenamed Project Alpine (despite the fact that the region isn't very mountainous... I came up with the codename before the region). I'm not sure if I'll ever see the hack through to becoming anything playable since I have very little experience hacking Pokémon games, but I quite like my region and want to immortalize it in a way. I might also use it in fanfiction in the future.
The region itself is based off of Northern Canada -- specifically, a piece of the Northwest Territories between the Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake. I wanted a place that was cold and snowy, so my main options were the Alps, Norway, Siberia, and Canada/Alaska. And I have to say, researching the place has been fascinating to me.
The name of the region is just the name of the Great Bear Lake in Slavey language (the language of the Native Americans from the region). There will be a less fourth-wall-breaking version of this information in the History section when I have it up.

Geography
The Sahtu Region is a landlocked region in the far north. It has long summer days with strong sunlight, and short, cold, harsh winter days. The land is mostly boggy taiga, with trees becoming somewhat more sparse further west toward the mountains. The main geographical features are two very large lakes: Lake Ferre in the north and Lake Rae in the south. Almost every town worth mentioning was built on the shore of one of these lakes, although a few have been built on the river that crosses the region.
Despite the fact that the region is ruled by trees and snow, there is quite a variety of Pokémon. Naturally, Ice and Grass types prevail, but there are also some Water types to be found (at least when the lakes aren't frozen over), and there is also a prominent Steel-type population due to all of the mines and mills in the region. There are also numerous other types that aren't affected by climate.
Towns, as previously stated, are almost entirely concentrated on the lake shores, although some inland communities do exist (though they have woefully small populations, not uncommonly in the double digits). Even the region's largest city, Aurelia, would pale in comparison to a city in any other region. The lakes freeze over in the winter and some of the water routes become ice routes that can be walked or driven over.
