  • The thing is, large scale protests like this are what spurned real change in the past. The black protests, the LGBT movement, etc. In the face of racial inequality that is still rampant today, the people are angry. Is a smashed window worth more than a life?
Of course, I wouldn't support needless destruction of property, but I have a feeling some people go to protests simply to take advantage of the distraction and loot/destroy things. A few makes a bunch of people look bad.

  • Racism isn't something that just goes away on its own in due time. Action is necessary, and yes, some of it will have to be radical action. It's easy for many of us who aren't affected (including me) to stand by our unrealistic "violence doesn't solve anything" ideal, but the truth is that the systemic prejudice is so entrenched in our culture that peaceful action hasn't come close to solving anything either, and it hasn't made a dent the racially motivated police killings. The system is broken, and it seems people are finally starting to pay attention.

It would probably better for such violence to be more targeted than just crazed riots though. Violence doesn't achieve anything unless it's directed and controlled.

well, that's why what the police do has worked for so long. they're directed and controlled. but for the rest of us, getting organised is anything but easy, and people will find both natural and artificial impediments aplenty along the way. it's called a state monopoly on violence, and monopoly is a key part of that.

    • Seen yesterday
look how quickly any substantial promise of change was co-opted and diluted the moment any structural threat, literally and figuratively, was taken out of the equation

spineless folk decrying the people taking issues into their own hands got exactly what they wanted - golden girls episodes being removed, but lori lightfoot resolutely staying her position as a christlike protective figure for the corruption behind all american police systems

a week of the possibility of violence not solely being the domain of the abusive state did more to influence america than a month of weak-willed state-supported marches, however good-intentioned and righteous those marches are
