10 weeks of anime: week eight
The best anime of all time
    ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ "

Here we go, everyone. Your chance to flex your inner weeb and duke it out- the topic? Read the title.

I want to know what, in your opinion, is the best anime in existence. I want to know why. I want you to go into such detail that you begin to ooze pocky and ramune. Provide me with visual evidence and as much insight as you can possibly muster. It should be easy, especially is you truly believe how great your favorite show actually is!

Have fun with it, and of course, wherever applicable, debate! Just remember- no insults, just healthy debate.

    Yay, it's here 8D.

I don't think I can come up with "the best" since just by myself I already have problems decided which is my favorite anime lol.

I would say the best stuff thing I have seen can be found below:
    • Monster. Probably the best psychological anime created so far. It doesn't even remotely relate to any anime. I wouldn't even consider at anime if it wasn't one lol.
    • Cowboy Bebop. Perfect story telling, lovely characters, great plot, amazing ending. What else do you need.
    • Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is probably my favorite show ever, so I guess I cannot properly discuss anything related to it objectively lol.
    • Byousoku 5 Centimeter (movie) A Masterpiece by Makoto Shinkai. Music, art and story flow into a perfect work that can easily turn into a tear jerker.
    • Aria the Origination. I won't accept a no.
    • Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica. What else can I say...
    • Fate/Zero: Urobutcher. Nuff' said.

    Best quotes ever.

The show was really well written, and each level of detail was intricately developed. Impressively low loophole to plot complexity ratio. I loved the color scheme. It really fits the mood of the series. Last episode omake was superb. Movie was fanservicesuperb.

Can't say much more without spoiling.

Tokyo Ghoul, for how we witnessed the main character's slow spiral from your average John Doe into a psychopath based on a very serendipitous occurrence.

Rurouni Kenshin, good plot, solid villains, although I sort of wish his attacks weren't a paragraph long.

Black Butler, (what's not good to say about this anyway?) great characters, greater art.

    Bakemonogatari... Special effects, 'nuff said.

... Tokyo Ghoul.... like the anime adaptation?

    It was completely butchered by Studio Pierrot, to the point it has (almost) no relation with the original manga, please tell me you actually mean the manga ;___;

Last episode omake was superb. Movie was fanservicesuperb.

I agree that this series was amazing. I am looking forward to playing the VN after I finish Fate/Stay Night VN. Is the movie really worth it? I feel like the story was already finished so I can't really get why a movie adaptation popped up out of nowhere.

Byousoku 5 Centimeter is definitely one of the best for me in terms of scenery porn, art and animation. I'd say next to it is that Cross Road special that was only two minutes.

Week Eight: The best anime of all time
Week Eight: The best anime of all time

If it had to be a series though, I would say Nagi No Asukara is pretty high up there:
Week Eight: The best anime of all time

Coming up with "the best anime ever" can't really be as simple as a piece of cake since a lot of us has different anime tastes so we can't really agree with each other. For example, most of my top 10 are filled with sports anime and despite me thinking it's one of the best genres ever I know lots of people don't like it. While I on the other hand can't get through anime like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Daily Lives of High school Boys or Clannad without falling bored.

A lot of us will be pulling out the favourites now so as for me: it would definitely be Hunter X Hunter 2011 - good writing, structure, development, depth, psychological struggles etc. I love it's unique plot and the characters are incredibly loveable.

The next two on my list, both sports anime, Inazuma Eleven and Yowamushi Pedal. Inazuma Eleven's take on a sports anime was incredibly different from most sports anime in that it was incredibly unrealistic. Despite that there was some pretty weird things happening the story was pretty brilliant to watch. The action and the soccer played in the anime too was pretty epic.
Friendships are kinda what gets me going more than a really deep emotional story or something so dark and psychological. Sure Kuroko and Haikyuu!! are great, but I mean, I cried at the end of YowaPed and a couple of parts of Inazuma - man I'm weird.

I'll probably chuck in a mention of Death Parade here since it's once of the first anime in while that's given me a bit of a thrill.

Objectively there's nothing like "The best anime" since that's always in the eye of beholder. And even any ranking is just biased.
Plus, you cannot easily compare different genres, different animations... it's just too hard to actually compare whether something is better or not.

But definitely mentioned 5cm/s or Clannad are a big candidate, because they can bring different emotions from almost everyone.

So my is pretty obvious. Mahouka.
Reason: It has HanaKana => it qualifies
    Reason 2: Onii-sama => best by default

Why are people so full of complements when it comes to the animation in 5 Centimeters Per Second? Personally thought it was pretty average as far as films go. Do people mean art style/backdrops when they say animation? Not trying to be confrontational here, I'm genuinely interested.

Makoto Shinkai has an unique talent: even the most boring thing can turn into something special if made by his hand. It is not just the art or the animation. The music, the story, the characters, they all 'make sense' in what they do.

Nevertheless I must confess I have seen people who watched the movie and never gave a f*ck. I believe the story is quite 'emotional' and if you haven't been in a similar situation the the whole thing will just turn into a generic romantic (and depressive) movie.

Oh, gotcha. It isn't that great as a stand alone on that area. I would go for an ufotable production if we were purely talking about good animation or whatever.

If you look at the first five seconds of the movie, you'll know what she means. Trillions of cherry blossom petals falling at 5 cm/s.

A great example is the motorcycle in the first scene. The way the motorcycle is sharply focused, and that everything else is blurred. The way that the light it reflects glows. The way the shadows have two layers. etc.

A huge plus for the lighting, shadows, and focus transitions. The character design of Shinkai movies in general isn't anything special, but I think that plainness adds to the authenticity of the work.

And then there's Garden of Words. Don't watch it to avoid having your eyes raped by art.

Ufotable are acceptable by anime series standard but they are so style over substance it hurts, and when they are actually good it only lasts for a few moments. Can't help but feel people just want flashy effects, filters and bloom over actual well done animation nowadays. Went into the the Kara no Kyoukai series after hearing endless gushing over how beautiful they were, safe to say I was disappointed. Only memorable piece of animation was that rotoscoped scene where Shiki ate some ice cream.

    How to words this...

5 centimeters per second was the first Makoto Shinkai piece I watched and mostly because I saw loads of gifs of the movie floating round on tumblr. Despite the style probably being done before, to me it gave me the same visually satisfying feels that you get when you see certain things placed in order or snow shaved in a perfect way.

It's not really the animation on it's own, but the animation mixed with in the art, the scenery and the colour design as well. The animations are incredibly fluid and crisp between every frame mixed with the use of depth, blurs and lighting, it molds in quite well with the environment around the characters.

I generally love Makoto Shinkai's works due to how he well it works the art and animation together. I think one of the particular things I like I bough them is the amount of details he puts into those small unnoticeable details and final touches that really lets the work stand out. For example in Garden of Words, that crisp rain and water drop animation or that certain panning action in Z-Kai: Cross Road you see when the Miho and the other students start taking the university entrance exams. There's that feeling that it feels realistic but at the same time it's still an animation really draws me in.

Idk Makoto Shinkai's work makes me happy and I can just watch it based on art and animation alone.

Nice to see Makoto Shinkai has a coulpe of fans over here 8D

I'm surprised no one mentioned Death Note? It used to have such a big fanbase before. I'm not very keen of the series, even though I did enjoy the manga at some point.

    Ontopic:

Ufotable produces what people wants to watch: fluent battle scenes. Something that most of lazy studios would never do due to budget issues. That's a undeniable fact. Of course if we are gonna compare it with something like Ghibli then they have nothing to do.

I've Just watched Gilgamesh vs Berserker to refresh my memory and it was worse than I remembered. Muh epic effects.

Ufotable are to animation as Justin Bieber is to music, I suppose.

I actually haven't watched all those 'best' anime.
E.g./ Steins Gate, UBW, FMA, Gurren Lagaan, Code Geass etc..

But what I have watched is Serial Experiments Lain.
Its an oldie, but I think it still holds up today. It's quite psychological with symbolism everywhere. Probably more than Utena, and like, more confusing. The main character of Lain is definitely my favourite part of the anime. She portrays an awkward child that

    YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

    Spoiler:

I really love the afterfeels that this show gives off. Also yeah, I think this was a forerunner to many of the Sci-Fi anime today.

This is was a really good show and I've seeded over 20 TB of this over the years.

    Overall a masterpiece.

Seconding Lain. I almost forgot one of the most stunning shows the 90's left us.

I will download the OST again, I just loved it.
