  • Iv'e always liked bug type for it's cute designs, Kricketune, charjabug, spidops to name a few. I also love bugs in real life, especially spiders. How are people so scared of them!? There also all so different from each other, A lot of types always seem to have a common color scheme for all the pokemon eg. most fairy types are pink and most water types are blue. but bug types don't seem to have a common color scheme they follow, which makes them look more diverse from each other, instead of just all pink cute things like the fairy type. anyway, that's why bug is my favorite!

  • I enjoy Water-type Pokémon because I always loved marine biology ever since I was little. I spent plenty of time studying deep sea lifeforms when I was little and watching documentaries about marine biology. When I was introduced to Pokémon and I learned that I could train Water-type Pokémon based on deep sea creatures, the surfing and fishing aspect of the Pokémon games became my favorite. It's one of the main reasons I love Hoenn and Alola so much. Hoenn gets too much flack for having "too much water," but to me, it's what makes it charming. Alola had the Mantine Surfing minigames, which was a lot of fun. To me, I believe the most interesting aspects of Pokémon exist in the Water. Many Water-type Pokémon have good designs and Water is a good type offensively and defensively.

Identifies no clear favorite type. Usually says Fire or Psychic for this sort of question. Selects it on favorite Pokemon, or perhaps even partially ideas independent of Pokemon (mind and fire focus).

  • My favorite type is Ghost. I love the spooky aesthetics of most Ghost types, ever since I caught my first Ghost (Giratina in Pearl), and trained it up into what's quite possibly my strongest Pokemon ever.

In terms of mechanics, the type has two resistances, and is the only type with two immunities, and both its weaknesses are to types that only do SE damage to itself and Psychic. This means that it can combo with any non-Psychic type without any 4x weaknesses. Offensively, Ghost doesn't hit a lot for Super-Effective damage, but it hits nigh-everything for at least neutral damage, so it makes a great backup attack type if I can't hit something super-effectively with my Pokemon's other moves.

  • Barring a handful of duds (but what type doesn't have some duds), Ice has nothing but good looking Pokemon imo.
Aesthetically for me it's just the type with the most Pokemon that have good designs.

Sure, Ice is a purely offensive typing and people love to complain about it's lack of resistances, but I've used Ice types on plenty of my playthrough teams and they've performed fine, usually better than other more popular mons that ended up on my team.

  • Fire has plenty of duds, even compared to other types (cough cough Heatran). But the good fire types are some of the coolest Pokemon of all time. Infernape, Skeledirge, Ho-Oh and Charizard all rock and it's not bad gameplay wise. Being weak to water sucks but being able to cut through annoying grass and steel types makes up for it imo.

  • I've had a love of Dark Types ever since I did a Nuzlocke of X many years ago. (mainly due to the Absol I caught and won the challenge with) But that wasn't the only instance of Dark Types being extremely OP. Dark is a very tough to come by Type in the Gen 2 remakes, and for good reason. I did a Nuzlocke of Soul Silver (technically another Nuzlocke since the first couple I tried ended in fairly early failure) and finally decided to try evolving the Eevee you get into an Umbreon (formerly an Eeveelution I wasn't all that fond of) and proceeded to blitz the rest of the game with it, even including the Red fight. (another fun fact about this run was that I merged the survivors of my previous Fire Red team with the survivors of my SS team, then went to face Red, the only 2 survivors of that fight being the Umbreon from SS and the Jolteon from FR lol, Eevee power!)

Edit: I forgot to mention that I tend to get along well with outcasts, and I'd say from a lot of Dark Type Pkemon's Dex logs that they are the 'outcast' Pokemon lol.

Dragons are just really fucking cool and interesting creatures. Doesn't hurt that usually they tend to be good/useful in games.

  • I actually can't say for sure, thinking on it now. There's something about the lightning element I love a lot (maybe it's because I loved it as a kid?) so the electric type itself stuck with me a lot. Plus it has some favorites like Raichu and the Mareep line. :D So...I guess I can say why I like it lol?? but it wasn't too clear in my head.

  • My favorite type is water, with ice being second. I love playing RPGs, especially playing as magic users. I've always been drawn to "blue" magic (water/ice sort of stuff), and that carried over into Pokémon.

  • My pick easily has to go to Normal Types, my main reason? they are just really cute more often than not :], however, I do have to say that when normal is paired with flying, I don't like it as much, still great pokémon design wise, but alot of the earlier birds are a bit boring to me haha.

But, yeah, Normal types have got to be my favorites, mostly for how adorable alot of them are, and just cause they are a fun type to use overall ! be it for breeding or overall battles!
Also, I feel like dual type Normal makes for the best designs in the series. 😁

  • Electric - Many of the mons of that type have great designs or concepts, are really good in battle, and it's nice to have only one weakness, even if I do think there should be at least one more.

Water - My first choice for a starter. I also like the lack of weaknesses and most of the time Surf is there as a move to learn which guarantees at least one strong move.

Dark - Simply because I just happen to like a lot of mons of this type.

I've always loved fire as an element in fiction. I think it's so cool when characters control fire, and as it turns out i also love the designs of many fire type pokémon. lol

It's ironic to me, because in person I am terrified of fire, even in restaurants were there is open flame cooking display, I back away from that stuff so fast.

  • Mainly the Froslass a friend traded me in high school that hit fast and hard and looked elegant doing it. Inspired me to make a mono-Ice team and a Gym Leader sona based around it.

Though my interest in Ice-types may actually be rooted in my Colo/XD days, when I was running a "Dark" team with Glalie and Walrein. Glalie knew Crunch and looked the part, but I can only guess that I assumed Walrein was part Dark because of a Team Aqua's Walrein card. (Glalie was my MVP, next to Umbreon.)

Ice is also one of the few types I can make a full team with of Pokémon I really like (the others being Normal and Water). Not necessarily a good team, but... =w=

Also, Ice-type moves are so pretty!

  • Grass and steel being my favorite types have polarizing reasons. Immediately getting into pokemon I favored a lot of steel types because of their designs. You got a pokemon like Aron that starts off as an adorable, little armored creature that evolves into a monster with armor ready for battle. There's also Metagross which reminded me of Metal Gear, and the giant X on its face just looked so cool to me. Then there's Scizor. A red bug-mon that's made of pure steel and has pincers for hands, as well as an intimidating gaze. (It is also responsible for becoming a bug type fanatic, although I much prefer grass and steel). I think what came down to it is all the steel mons looking very intimidating, yet simplistic. Like Skarmory just being a giant bird but made of metal, Magnezone looking like a futuristic UFO with 2 magnets for hands, or Bronzong being a giant floating bell. It just works.

As for grass, this took me a long time to be my favorite. I used to really despise grass-mons because I never thought they were powerful enough. They have many weaknesses, like fire, ice, flying, poison, and bug. Because of that reason I did not choose to use them, ever. That was until I got pokemon leafgreen and decided to use Bulbasaur because Venusaur was on the cover. That choice alone changed my entire look on grass types forever (even after losing constantly to Agatha). I began using status moves, leech seed, and sunny day more often. That helped me develop more strategies when playing pokemon, and it helped me improve as a player. I started giving other grass types a try, like Vileplume, Breloom, Roserade, and Torterra. By the time gen 5 rolled around it added some grass-mons that had designs I really liked. Like Serperior, Lilligant, Virizon, and Ferrothorn. With the release of Black 2, Grass soon became my primary starter choice for all regions (except Johto and Hoenn). Even afterwards I reevaluated many grass-mons I overlooked like Exeggutor, Sceptile, Shiftry, Cactrune, and Victreebel. After several years I can say I really love grass types because they taught me how to use strategy, like sleep + leech seed and sunny day + chlorophyll.

I like Ghost because I like spooky stuff.
But the weird thing about it is that a lot of my favourite pokemon are Fairy-type. Technically I like Fairy more, but personally, I'm always going to be a Ghost-type fan for the spookiness alone.

I don't count viability as a reason I like a type or pokemon. A lot of weak or "useless" pokemon are my favourites.

  • You know, to be honest? I'm not sure. I just feel naturally drawn to grass types, for some reason! I can't explain it. It has extended to even other video games. Like, Dendro is my favorite element. It's weird because I'm an indoors person! Like, nature is cool, of course. But, idk! I've never been able to explain why I just love the nature element in video games!

  • Here's a fun fact: Fairy was my least favourite type once, because in my opinion they were way overpowered... as if Ghost, my favourite type back then, wasn't a bit broken in itself.

Then came Mimikyu in Generation VII, and I started very much enjoying seeing my own raggedy babies use Play Rough and wipe the floor with Dragon- and Dark-types. Hell, they defeated Necrozma with Let's Snuggle Forever in both of my Ultra Sun playthroughs! However, it wasn't until I played Pokémon Xenoverse that I started really believing in Fairies. I realized there were a lot of (fanmade) Pokémon of that type in the game that I wanted to give a chance to, so I did a Fairy Monotype run (which I shared here in these very forums). This team turned out to be one of my favourites in any Pokémon game I have played, and ever since then I have fully embraced it as my speciality type. I've got to give credit where credit is due, though; having Mimikyu as my favourite Pokémon made the transition from Ghost to Fairy a lot easier, because no matter which type I stuck with, I would always be able to carry my little buddy with me. And even if I'm now also incorporating Electric-types (currently my second favourite type) into my ensemble, I always make sure to let them learn Fairy moves for extra coverage.

It certainly helps that a lot of changes in my life made me... less edgy and more appreciative of conventionally cute stuff (and more averse to creepy shit), and therefore more prone to picking Fairy-types. Considering my type speciality change happened in parallel with a change in gender identity (namely, going from more female-of-center to more male-of-center), I also appreciate that, in addition to strong, eccentric female Fairy-type Trainers, we have two male specialists who aren't derided by the narrative for training a type that might be considered traditionally feminine. Yes, Bede was essentially strong-armed into it by Opal, and Ortega was bullied at school, but it's clear that they derive their strength from their style and type preference - and Bede even comes out a better person because of his training and experiences with this type, even if he doesn't want to admit it. In that regard, I aspire to be more like them going forward, even if the odds are against me.
