I just noticed that St. Anger was booted out. Instead of keeping us in the dark as to why the member got banned, why not have a sub-forum of CQ+F where everytime someone got banned, a mod/admin posted in there who got banned etc? There's lots of forums that do this and it's good. :)

  • I don't think its any of our business as to why someone got banned.

I like to know why somebody got banned, because I hate it when someone's banned and no reasons are given out to the community.

  • You should only know why someone got banned if that person knows you personally, other then that its only for the staff and the person him/herself to know.

Spey, your concern is appreciated. But it has always been a policy between staff members to keep bans strictly confidential between themselves and the people who have been involved in the outcome.

Bans are controversial in the sense that they can get people riled up. Whether they be friends of the banned people, enemies of the banned people...or just people wanting to satisfy their curiosity; if reasons were disclosed out in the open it would bait easily excitable responses that can become very hard to control.

There are rules in place for a reason. It's all to keep members in line with each other and the peace of the community ensured.

I think in some situations if a member gets banned for something that needs to be known to the complete community it would be good to inform people. But other than that, I don't think someone's ban should be displayed publicly to thousands of people. It's bad enough they got banned, spreading it around just adding insult to injury for them.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but I forgot to add: only mods or admins could post in the forum if it was made, everyone else could only read.

  • First of all, they'd already be pissed that they were banned. Could you imagine how much more pissed they would be if they realized that the entire community could see why they were banned?

Then that would basically defeat half of the purpose of one of the staff forums. That's like taking the thread used to manage banned users and expanding it. Having a thread for each individual banned would mean we would have close to 2,810 +/- threads made.

Why would you need to know? If you read the rules it states the reason of a ban is between the staff and the said member.

I think it's being shown on why members are getting banned. They broke the forum rules and that's the highest reason on why they are getting banned. Really, it isn't any of our business on why they get banned though.

I doubt it would ever get its own forums. There simply aren't enough bans that would need to get explained.

Most of the time, you can tell why a person was banned using common sense (horrible trolling, spambots/advertising, posting illegal content, etc.). In an other case, such punishments are the banned member's personal information, thus it will not be given out.

First of all, they'd already be pissed that they were banned. Could you imagine how much more pissed they would be if they realized that the entire community could see why they were banned?

There's not much difference between everyone seeing that they are banned and why they were banned. Unless it was really stupid, then they should be mad at themselves for doing such a stupid thing. I don't support a whole forum for announcing every time someone is banned, but I wouldn't be against a small note in their profile if necessary.

Which we have done in the past, kinda. Concerning someone's old ban, we made announcements on password protection. Although the member was kept hidden, the overall situation lead to an announcement to better the community and their passwords.

Or even better, not have the reason in a person's signature and have their contact info on their profile blocked?

  • If it was some very important reason, such as hacking, then perhaps we should. But usually it's just because they were flaming or something, or some personal issue, so we should have no interest.

  • Well, first off, it's a rule that the ban reason is confidential to the staff and member.

But it's quite obvious that it was because he was spamming, just to get booted out.

I see no reason to be nosy, and that's that.

Here's a suggestion, based on some of the comments in this thread.

What about having a thread, which has bans in it? But only the serious type of bans (illegal content, hentai, pornography) gets their place there? All the other types, can stay private.

    Better idea?

Sure, people get curious as to why other members are banned, but what it boils down to is that it just isn't anyone else's business. It's between the user who was banned, and maybe two or three of the staff. There's no reason for everyyyone to know why someone was banned from PC.. that could make the user feel bad, too. D: If you were banned, you probably wouldn't want everyone knowing why, same goes for me, if I was. x_x
