    Everyone is Here!

Welcome to Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate! This mod of Pokémon Conquest took over a year to complete and completely overhauls the game from scratch, making it the largest Pokémon Conquest mod to date!

It features 150 new fully evolved Pokémon from up to Gen 9 (including regional forms!), 50 returning Pokémon, and gets rid of the LC and NFE Pokémon that are completely useless after the first 2% of the game. This more than doubles the amount of fully evolved Pokémon available to use! The roster has also been balanced around making sure all types are equally represented, from the Pokémon themselves (along with a few type changes to fill previously unused type combos, such as Bug/Dragon Flygon!) to the moves they use. Everything from moves (of which there are almost 100 new ones!), abilities, Warrior Skills, Pokémon stats, and more have been completely rebalanced to make the game more fair, fun, and strategic. With 200 fully evolved Pokémon and 200 Warriors, every Warrior now has a unique Perfect Link, and in addition, every Warlord now has a "special" Pokémon they partner with, such as Magoichi with Shaymin-Sky or Kunoichi with Chi-Yu. The Hero can "choose" their starter at the beginning of "The Legend of Ransei", as they now start with all seven Eeveelutions. Difficulty has been greatly increased through a variety of methods, so I wouldn't be surprised if you lose battles along the way! Battlefields are updated and will continue to be updated, as well as the rest of the game as more tools and developments become available! In-game text has been updated to Gen 9 standards and to provide more information to the player.

I hope you enjoy all of these new features and updates, and you can find out more about them down below and in the documentation and database! Thank you very much for playing!

    New Features in Ultimate:

    A completely rebalanced roster!

Gone are the days of vanilla Conquest having a million ultra-powerful Fire-types and only two Flying-type users! The roster has been entirely remade from scratch, with each type being equally represented, and there is a fairly even number of Pokémon that use moves of each type. Obviously some types are still better than others (thanks GameFreak!), but at least you have a lot of options for each of them in Ultimate. Additionally, there are no "duplicate" Pokémon in Ultimate, as no two Pokémon share the same type combination and move type. Eight Pokémon have had their types changed to fill unused type combinations, such as Bug/Dragon Flygon, Ghost/Rock Cursola, and Normal/Steel Dubwool. Weaker Pokémon, such as Beedrill, have had BST increases to make them at least useable, while all moves and abilities have been completely rebalanced to be more fair and fun. This allows every Pokémon to stand out, no matter how powerful it may be. Each Pokémon has also had its abilities picked from scratch, leading to better flavor and balance, and has its signature move whenever possible, such as Ice Ball Walrein, or at least a move that it would commonly be associated with, such as Meteor Mash Metagross or Flamethrower Charizard.

200 fully evolved Pokémon - no LC or NFE Pokémon!

The rebalanced roster features 200 fully evolved Pokémon, giving you over double the options of vanilla Conquest! In the original game, LC and NFE Pokémon are only relevant and useful for the first half of "The Legend of Ransei", the first of 38 stories, which is less than 2% of the entire game! It is a big waste to use over half the slots on Pokémon that are relevant for less than 2% of the game, so all of those LC and NFE Pokémon have now been replaced by additional fully evolved Pokémon. You will be using and battling against fully evolved Pokémon from the start, and all 37 post-game stories have been changed so that enemies use fully evolved Pokémon from the start, which also has the added effect of making the stories much more difficult as well.

150 new Pokémon - including up to Generation 9!

200 fully evolved Pokémon is over double what was in vanilla Conquest, so obviously those new fully evolved Pokémon have to come from somewhere! There have been 150 new Pokémon added from Generation 1 all the way to Generation 9, including regional forms, while 50 Pokémon have returned from the original game. Play with new Pokémon such as Alolan Raichu, Starmie, Kleavor, Heracross, Mamoswine, Breloom, Roserade, Torterra, Gastrodon, Sigilyph, Ferrothorn, Greninja, Noivern, Decidueye, Kommo-o, Centiskorch, Dragapult, Ceruledge, Gholdengo, and many more! Play with returning Pokémon such as Crobat, Weavile, Metagross, Spiritomb, Haxorus, and more!

Every Warrior has a unique Perfect Link!

In vanilla Conquest, Conkeldurr has a Perfect Link with five Warriors! Five! No longer is this an issue in Ultimate as there are 200 Pokémon and 200 Warriors, so every Warrior has a unique Perfect Link! Of course, you are welcome to use other Pokémon as well, as every Warrior now has a 70% max link with every Pokémon that matches their type specialty, giving each Warrior over 35 Pokémon with which to partner. Hopefully this will lead to a lot of options and variety for the player! Each Warrior has a 0% max link with all other Pokémon that don't match their type specialty, so delegating your Warriors to find new partners should be much more useful in Ultimate since they cannot link with a bunch of Pokémon with which they have low max links. These changes make needing an out-of-game chart less important as it is easy to remember what Pokémon each Warrior links with, but of course the Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate Database is always available if needed.

Every Warlord partners with a "special" Pokémon!

In vanilla Conquest, there were ten legendary or mythical Pokémon for nine Warlords. In Ultimate, every Warlord gets their own special Pokémon! Partner Motochika with Keldeo, Mitsuhide with Chien-Pao, Yoshihiro with Galarian Zapdos, Keiji with Great Tusk, and many more! All of these special Pokémon can be found in the story of its partner Warlord after "The Legend of Ransei", so search them out and become one with some of the strongest and rarest Pokémon!

    Choose your starter!

The Hero starts "The Legend of Ransei" with all seven Eeveelutions! After the first tutorial battle, you can access the info screen and switch to whichever Pokémon with which you prefer to play through the story. Technically, you can switch to different Eeveelutions as often as you want throughout the story, but I highly recommend sticking to one Pokémon the whole story or else it will quickly fall behind in link percentange. Plus, it is fun to stick with a single starter to grow and bond with it!

    Massively increased difficulty!

For the best gameplay experience and maximum difficulty, it is highly recommended that you play WITHOUT items. Items have been completely rebalanced in Ultimate, so if you still wish to use them, you are welcome to do so and they should be more fair (although some are still too strong and there is unfortunately no way to balance them currently) compared to vanilla Conquest. However, "The Legend of Ransei" has been balanced around you not using any items, with it being very difficult, but still fair, if you do not use any. As more modding developments are made, the game will continue to be updated and made more difficult as well!

Rebalanced and more strategic Warrior Skills!

In addition to the previously mentioned Pokémon, moves, abilities, items, and basically everything else, Warrior Skills have also been completely overhauled and rebalanced. In vanilla Conquest, most skills lasted for three turns, making them incredibly uninteresting to use, not to mention very overpowered. The battle would begin, you spend a turn or two moving towards the opposing army, and once the actual battle starts, you spam all your three turn Warrior Skills, reap the benefits forever, and the battle is over. In Ultimate, all Warrior Skills have had their power level reworked, but more importantly, most Warrior Skills now only last for a single turn. This makes deciding when to use it a much more interesting decision. Do you use it to make sure you get it off before you die, but perhaps get suboptimal usage and value out of it? Or do you wait for the optimal moment to use it and get the maximum value, but risk dying and not using it at all? Do you really need something specific on a given turn? Maybe that is the turn to use it! I hope that this will lead to much more fun, interesting, and strategic gameplay as opposed to simply spamming them all as the battle begins, as well as a more balanced gameplay experience.

    Updated battlefields!

Do you hate playing on Illusio? In Ultimate, that is a thing of the past! Many maps have been updated to provide a better experience! These changes range from entirely new maps, such as Avia and Illusio, to small updates, such as a doorway being added to the south wall in Viperia to promote more freedom of movement. If there is a map in the game that you still don't like, fear not! The maps will continue to be updated over time as more progress and development is made by the great Pokémon Conquest modders!

In-game text updated for a better user experience!

Move and ability names have been updated to Generation 9 standards, such as Compoundeyes -> Compound Eyes. All text descriptions have been updated to provide more information to the player, such as the number of turns an effect lasts, while still keeping the ambiguous nature of Pokémon by not giving exact percents.

    Current Limitations:

Pokémon Conquest modding is still in its relative infancy compared to the mainline Pokémon games or more popular spinoffs such as the Mystery Dungeon series. We do not have the same tools available to us, and this leads to some unfortunate instances where things cannot be changed exactly how we would like them. However, developments continue to be made all the time, and as progress is made, I will continue to update the game to fix these problems. In the mean time, none of these issues break the game, and it still functions normally and is completely playable!

Hideyoshi is harcdoded to spawn in the battle in Viperia in "The Legend of Ransei" with whatever is in the Monferno slot. Neither the Pokémon he spawns with or the link percentage of the Pokémon can be modified at the moment. This is why there is Hideyoshi with a random underleveled Golurk in that fight.

Nixtorm is messed up and only five enemies are present in the kingdom in "The Legend of Ransei". I don't currently know what is causing this or how to fix it. If you want it to be a fair battle, only take five Warriors yourself!

The final "boss" battle (I don't want to spoil it if you've never played before!) in "The Legend of Ransei" is also hardcoded. The same Warlords appear as in vanilla with whatever Pokémon is in the slot of their vanilla Pokémon, and their link percentages also cannot be modified. If this battle seems scuffed to you, this is why!

A select few Perfect Links max out at 99% instead of 100%. There is a bug where if a Warrior or Pokémon has more Perfect Links than they were assigned in vanilla Conquest, the game will repeat the Perfect Link message every time they perform an action, which is very annoying and makes the game unfun to play.

As is the case in all games before Generation 6, there is a shorter character limit for the names of Pokémon, moves, abilities, etc. Some of the more recent Pokémon and moves have names that are longer than the Generation 5 character limit, so they had to be shortened, such as Meowscarada -> Meowscrada and First Impression -> 1st Impression.

Move effects can be edited fairly well, although not with full customization yet. Ability effects can barely be edited at all.

Pokémon cries cannot currently be edited.

The Legendary event spawns are not intended to be used in Ultimate, but they cannot be turned off. They still occur when the vanilla conditions are met, although there are new Pokémon in each slot, so these events can now seem to be random and not make any sense. Until we learn how to turn these events off, I would recommend ignoring them, although you are certainly welcome to use the event and link with the Pokémon if you wish.

This is not a limitation, but please don't use passwords! They were designed for the vanilla game, not Ultimate, and everything is more easily obtainable in Ultimate anyways so they are really not needed.

Over 80% of the Pokémon have full battle animations, but there are some that have static placeholder sprites (similar to Pokémon Showdown at the start of a new Generation). I am not an artist, so it is extremely difficult for me to animate them myself. If you would like to improve on any of the sprites in the game, please feel free to do so (Conquest sprites have a max size of 32x32 and a max of 16 colors including transparency, so they are more or less the same as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon sprites, but with less total frames). Send them my way and I would be more than happy to include them in the game (and give you credit, of course!)!

    Discord:

The Ransei Region Discord server can be accessed with the following link. Please note that it is not my server, but just a general Pokémon Conquest server. I do have a "Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate Discussion and Feedback" thread under the "Conquest Romhacking" header, and this is by far the easiest and fastest way for me to see anything that you say, as well as to get into contact with me. I love to read feedback and see the teams people are using, so feel free to post them in that thread!

    Download and Documentation:

The following link includes all of the following:
    • The Overview page (this page you are reading now - please read before playing!)
    • The Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate mod
    • Instructions for downloading and installing RanseiLink and Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate
    • A complete database for all things Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate (please download this and open in Excel if possible because the pictures seem to get messed up when opening in Excel Online)
    • A list of changes from vanilla Conquest (Pokémon, moves, abilities, Warriors, etc.)
    • A changelog detailing Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate updates

    https://1drv.ms/f/s!AhJrefA_sekhhd8J5sGni4I_dHFHkQ

I strongly recommend playing without items for the best and most difficult experience, as that is what the gameplay is balanced around. Please do not use passwords, as they were designed for the vanilla game, not Ultimate, and they are not needed in this mod.

    Latest Update:

    Version 3.0.6 - March 28th, 2024
    • Updated all the small menu sprites for Mudsdale.
    • Updated the battle sprites for Mudsdale, Orbeetle, and Sandaconda.

Pokémon Conquest: Ultimate v1.0.13 is available now.

    Version 1.0.13 - June 12th, 2023
    - Nidoking's small overworld menu sprite is no longer one pixel too tall.
    - Changed the max link of all Perfect Links (excluding the Eeveelutions) from 99% to 100% because the repeating text bug should no longer apply in these cases.

I never played Conquest before so this sounds like the perfect excuse to finally try it one day with all these nice features. Maybe once the patches die down a bit so I don't need to keep updating every few days lol.

Lack of comments so far is real unfortunate though, cause this hack does deserve more attention I feel.

Conquest is my favorite spinoff and I've been hoping for a remake or new game for a long time. Love that you've decided to make a hack. Just finished taking over the grass and water areas and personally, my favorite parts of Conquest were training and recruiting. So personally I feel weird having full evos from the start and it seems very easy. I managed to take over all 3 regions elemental regions within an hour (with speedup). I would love just more evo lines, moves, and abilities.

Thank you for the kind words!

I've admittedly been slightly disappointed at how little attention this has gotten so far (in general, not necessarily on this site). On another site, I posted this (an entire, completed, never-done-before game that took over a year to make), and then someone else posted a single screenshot of something they modded into a mainline game that probably took about ten minutes, and their post got 10x more interaction than this got. That was a discouraging moment…

Conquest is just way less popular than the mainline games or Mystery Dungeon, and there's some people in a few of the Pokémon communities I'm in that didn't even know Conquest existed when I showed them this mod.

That is actually one of the reasons I made this mod though! There have been so many amazing mods made of each of the mainline games. Drayano alone it seems like has made a banger mod for each of them! There isn't really anything I can do that would be new. Whenever I go to replay Conquest (which is a lot!), I always search for a Gen 7, Gen 8, Gen 9 version, whatever, and nothing ever comes up! I figure if it's something I want and look for, other people do as well! This is something I could do that has never been done before!

This is why I'm bummed about the lack of response so far. I don't care in the least about the likes or whatever, but I just want it to become widespread so it can get into the hands of as many people that want to play something like this as possible, and without a lot of interaction is is harder for more people to find it.

It has been nice, though, that I've had multiple people, such as yourself, tell me they've never played Conquest before and this mod made them want to try it! I hope you have fun, and if you do, please share with your friends! I love getting to hear feedback and see the teams people are using, so feel free to post them in the Ultimate Discussion and Feedback thread on Discord or here!

Sorry about all the patches, but I want the game to be the best it can be! :]

I love conquest so it nice to see this! can't wait to see the final product!

    Thank you very much!

As I said in the Overview, we are still in the very early stages of modding Conquest compared to other Pokémon games, so there are definitely some big advancements still to be made. Figuring out how to improve the AI would be huge because currently it sucks, and being able to increase the rate at which enemy armies improve their links would be big as well for increasing difficulty as currently it's too slow.

A more realistic current goal is to improve the maps, particularly by making new ones, and this is something that has recently begun to be done. These obviously take a long time, but I think you should expect to see some additional new maps in the coming months. :]

  • Unironically kinda looks like a cool bit. Though, if I can poke about two-three things:

    1. Why the type changes for some Mons? This ain't a traditional Mons game, I kinda doubt people are gonna be complaining about types in Conquest of all things.

    2. The Mon art for new entries is HYPER crusty looking and jpeg-esque in screenshots, yeesh

    3. Other mods for the game have been lookin into slipping in more moves for Mons to give em a bit of variety. Is that gonna be on the table in a later update?

Outside of that though, kudos for pushin all this in! I'll probably give it a crack soon and see how it plays and feels.

Thank you for the interest, and feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like! I will say that based on some of your word choices, it sounds like you're not the biggest fan in Conquest to begin with (which is fine) and kinda comes across as dismissive (less fine). Yeah, it's not the most popular, but myself and the Conquest community still want it to be the best it can be! :]

    1. In the Conquest community, we complain A LOT about the type balance of the vanilla game. It is insanely unbalanced, and it blows my mind that they released the game in that state. It is ridiculous! You are right that Little Timmy probably doesn't care about the balance and diversity of the game, but we care a lot, so achieving that was the most important goal for this game.

Pokémon, as you have pointed out, only have a single move. You can give two Pokémon that share types a different move type (Lunatone a Rock-type move and Solrock a Psychic-type move, for example), but after the first two there is no way to make additional Pokémon stand out. This makes having a lot of type diversity among the Pokémon themselves very important.

Because I remade the game from scratch, this wasn't too much of an issue anymore. There weren't a bunch of Psychic types and a bunch of super-powered Fire types. However, I still wanted to make sure each type was pretty equally represented, and I still wanted to maintain as much diversity as possible. Deciding to change the types of a few Pokémon was one of the last things I did when making the roster (along with giving small buffs to weak Pokémon to make them at least useable), but adding the remaining eight unused types helped a lot to balance out the roster. It's not something I wanted to do originally or planned on doing, but it made the gameplay better and I made sure that it was still flavorful and as few changes as possible. I went and picked out which Pokémon would best fit each of these eight types, such as Castform-Snowy for Normal/Ice. For what it's worth, these were decided (like a lot of things in this mod!) with feedback from the Conquest community on Discord.

    2. You're talking about the large menu art? Could they be better, yeah, but I don't think they're that bad! Have you played Conquest before? If you compare them side by side with the art from the vanilla game, I don't think they're much worse. Maybe slightly, but I don't think they're that far off. The whole game is very pixely, so I think they fit pretty well.

There is one person who made some custom artwork for a few Pokémon, and they look nice, but they don't really match the style for Conquest compared to the vanilla artwork. They stand out a lot. The ones I added blend in very well I think. If they make a custom artwork for every Pokémon in the game, then sure, I might put to a vote which art looks better, and if the custom art wins then I could add them all to the game.

As a general rule, I am happy to add any assets to the game if people want to make them and send them to me. I am not an artist in any way, so it is a big struggle for me to make original artwork myself. In particular, we could still use battle sprites for a few more Pokémon, so if there are any artists out there, hit me up! The Conquest community is pretty small though, so we generally just have to make it work with what we have!

For most of those large menu sprites, I took the official artwork and used a program to resize them to fit the game. It gets the job done!

    3. Do you mean giving Pokémon two moves, such as giving Empoleon Hydro Pump and Flash Cannon? No, that is not something you should be expecting to see anytime soon as it is not currently possible.

There are things that we can't yet change, but should clearly be possible with more development because they already exist within the base game. Things such as more specifically editing wild spawns, the rate at which enemy armies improve their link, custom ability effects, etc. Giving Pokémon multiple moves is not something that exists in the base game, meaning we would have to add this function ourselves. I would say this is impossible, but I know that with many years and talented people working on development for the mainline games, many amazing features and tools have been added that were not possible in the base games. So yes, I suppose I won't say it is impossible to add a second move for each Pokémon, but I would not expect this anytime in the near or somewhat distant future.

Also, it is worth noting that it is still unclear if adding a second move for each Pokémon even improves gameplay. We talk about this a lot in the Conquest community and it is a highly requested feature for if they make a Conquest 2, but I think there is a somewhat decent chance that it actually adds nothing to the game because everyone sticks to the same (better) move or just switches to whatever move is good for the upcoming kingdom. I could be wrong of course, as it is really hard to say for sure without playtesting that kind of thing. It could be great!

Jacob actually somewhat recently released a Move Swap mod of the vanilla game that basically gives every Pokémon two moves. They achieved this by removing the LC and NFE Pokémon from the game, "duplicating" the remaining Pokémon, and giving the "duplicates" a different move. Basically, every Pokémon exists twice in the Dex, and they can freely evolve into each other, therefore swapping their move. Obviously this is gimmicky and removes a bunch of Pokémon, but it does work, and I would definitely recommend it if this is a feature you are looking for. It is good fun, even if a bit crazy!

However, this is not something I can do, as obviously that would require removing half the Pokémon, as well as going back and completely overhauling the game. Basically I would have to rebuild the game from the ground up, which defeats the purpose of this mod, and at that point it would more or less be remaking Jacob's mod, which is also kinda pointless.

Jacob's mod can be accessed through the same Discord link as I have posted here for Ultimate. Their mod hasn't been posted anywhere else as far as I'm aware, so I'm not even sure how you know about it if you are not in the server, but if you are, it is in #finished-roms-and-mods.

If you are not talking about Jacob's Move Swap mod, then I have no idea what mods you are referring to because there are no other creators that have messed with adding extra moves to Pokémon due to it not being possible. Like I said, the Conquest community is very small, and the Conquest romhacking community is minuscule. Unlike the mainline games where there are a billion mods and there is no way someone could keep up with every new thing, there are very few for Conquest and we know everything that happens and every development that is made. I suppose someone could've gone rogue and made some absolutely insane developments and released a mod, but I dunno how they would do that without any of us knowing about it or finding out. My mod is the biggest to date, and I wanted to keep it a secret until release so that it could be a surprise, but I ended up announcing it about six months before release because I needed help from the other modders and to get feedback! I suspect others would have to do the same.

Thank you again for the interest, and I hope you have fun! I always welcome any feedback! :]

So not sure where this bug could be coming into play, but on the second tutorial battle the seadra is stuck out of the map at the top left corner. This makes it to where I can not attack it or be attacked. I don't know if this is a bug from the rom or what. The Scyther will appear on the map just fine.

From the Overview, under Current Limitations:
In the second tutorial battle (the first after Oichi joins your army), the wild Kingdra spawns out of bounds due to the fact that it is a hardcoded tutorial battle and the the game is not expecting the Level 3 Farm to be loaded (which I had to make happen due to the the previous issue I mentioned with the wild Pokémon spawns). The Kingdra cannot be interacted with, which makes this battle unwinnable, but this is not a big issue as you can immediately run from the battle and the game continues on like normal.

Thank you for the feedback though, and if you notice anything else or have any other thoughts, please feel free to share! I hope you have fun, and thank you very much for playing! :]

Thank you for the quick feedback I did not realize that I could run from this battle due to it being a tutorial! I also did not see the previous response to this same bug thank you for bringing that to my attention!

I love what you did to the most underrated games in Pokemon history. My guy, you are a legend, definitely trying this one. My happiness is overflowing!

Thank you for putting Blaziken btw, it was one of the Pokemon that I really wanted in this game!
